Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater ProjectGreetings from the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater Project team. The warm, dry weather is in our favour as we install a key part of the Heathcote Valley pipeline along Port Hills Road and continue building the Simeon Quay pump station. We're pleased to tell you we're currently commissioning the Cashin Quay pump station, while the Diamond Harbour pump station on track for commissioning in December. The Governors Bay pump station continues to divert that community's wastewater for treatment at Lyttelton. Thank you for all your patience as we work towards ending the routine discharge of treated wastewater into Lyttelton Harbour and creating a healthier harbour for current and future generations to enjoy. What's happening at Simeon Quay? Here's Fulton Hogan Leading Hand Nick Wilcox checking the formwork for the wet well. Our team completed the construction of the pump station's wet well last month. 3D model of Simeon Quay pump stationThis is what the Simeon Quay pump station will look like when complete. We're planning to start building the foundations towards the end of this year, and construct the pump station building early next year. Next steps for Simeon QuayWe are now preparing to install wastewater pipes and connections underneath the road on Simeon Quay to connect up with Cashin Quay and the Lyttelton Tunnel. This is in the live traffic lane, so work will take place at nights (Sunday nights to Thursday nights). We'll dig a trench through the road using a digger and hydro excavator. We're planning to start this work at the end of November for around three weeks and traffic management will be in place so you'll know where to go. This temporary formwork, pictured below, makes the wet well safe for workers to walk across during its construction, but has now been removed. We're commissioning Cashin QuayThe construction of Cashin Quay pump station is in its final stages and we are carrying out testing to make sure the station is working as it should.Cashin Quay has several ways to deal with wastewater overflow if needed, which ensures there is enough space for storage at the pump station in a storm event.During normal operations, the wastewater will be pumped through the new wet well tank at Cashin Quay to the Simeon Quay Pump Station.Buffer tanks save the dayWhen there is excess wastewater which cannot be pumped, the water will be held in a storage tank behind the wet well. If the new storage tank is also unable to cope, the water will be transferred to an additional buffer tank on the site which offers more storage. An update on the Heathcote Valley pipelineWe’re well underway installing the Heathcote Valley pipeline that will connect Lyttelton Harbour’s wastewater system with the main Christchurch treatment plant in Bromley. So far we've laid just over 3 kilometres of the pipeline. We’ve now installed pipe from the corner of Mauger Drive along Port Hills Road to the shops. Temporary chip sealing over the trench has been completed with additional roading works planned. Access to the local shops will remain open at all times while we lay the pipeline along Port Hills Road. You won't be able to park on the road, but there is parking available onsite at the Maltworks shopping complex. All business owners will be kept up to date throughout construction. Alport Place on hold while paddocks progressAlport Place Works on Alport Place are currently on hold and will restart in a few weeks. The traffic management will remain in place to ensure residents remain safe. Paddocks Works in the paddocks are now complete up to the horizontal drilling section at the Ferry Road side of the paddocks. The horizontal drilling under the Heathcote River is planned for January and will be completed on a night shift. We'll share more information about this part of the project in November. Thanks for your patienceWe would like to take the opportunity to thank the community for their patience while we complete the Heathcote Valley pipeline.
