40 Years of the Equal Pay act and...

Close the Gap have launched a new campaign poster marking the fact that more than 40 years of the after the Equal Pay Act, there is still a gender pay gap in Scotland. Women earn 12% less than men (full-time hourly rates) and this increases to 32% for women working part-time.

Govt delay pension age rise by 6 months

The government have announced an amendment to the Pensions Bill currently going through parliament to equalize the pension age betwen women and men. The state pension age of 66 is now proposed to come into effect from October 2020 rather than April 2020. Age UK who have been campaigning on behalf of the estimated 330,000 women who would have had to wait up to 2 years longer to receive their pension welcomed the move as a 'much needed welcome respite' but would have liked the proposal to go further. Women's Views on News reports that 16 out of the 47 member states have signed the Council of Europe's Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (CAHVIO) which was launched in May and therefore it has yet to be ratified. The Council of Europe have published a podcast which, in a series of interviews including Nicola Harwin from Women's Aid, the aims of the convention are set out. March to defend women's rights

The Fawcett Society are organising a protest march for Saturday 19th November in London to highlight the threat to women's equality posed by the governments policies. The march is '50's themed' as the message is that women are being pushed out of the workforce and back into the home as a result of cuts to benefits and services. Find out more
