Counting Women In

Engender supports the new campaign group, Counting Women In, which was launched this week and is calling for 50/50 gender representation at all levels of government.  The campaigns first action is a petition calling on David Cameron to honour his promise to have women make up one third of the cabinet by the end of his first term.  Find out more 

Tackling sexual exploitation

The European Women's Lobby reports on an event on Prostitution and Trafficking for Sexual Exploitation, hosted by the Portugese Platform for Women's Rights and links to the presentations given on the day.  Ann Hamilton, who worked on End Prostitution Now in Glasgow and is now General Manager of the Human Trafficking Foundation presented on the approach taken to combat sexual expolitation in Glasgow. Gender Equality and Develpment

The World Bank has published a report titled Gender Equality and Development, reiterating it's commitment to women's empowerment and stating that 'gender equality is a core development objective in it's own right'.  However, Elizabeth Arend from Gender Action argues that the bank's gender-blind investments undermine the rhetoric.   Read More

Engender are raising awareness of how the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) can work for women in Scotland.  The Convention, which the UK Government has signed up to, allows women to challenge the government over policies which disproporionately affect women negatively - will we see a case against the current austerity measures on these grounds?  Our umbrella  and conference bag carry the slogan 'It's raining cuts and hard slogs' and reference the cuts to public services and the welfare reform measures which are impacting on women.
