New York, NY -- The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is deeply disappointed that the acting head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently called on New York City to end its sanctuary city policies, citing the tragic murder of Maria Fuentes by an undocumented immigrant as rationale.

While CPC condemns this senseless violence, we simultaneously reject the notion that an individual tragic act should be used to further marginalize immigrant communities or change policies that make the city a safer place where all New Yorkers can thrive, including sanctuary policies and bail reform.

With one in seven Asian immigrants being undocumented, and nearly half of all active immigration court cases in NYC being Asian American (20% Chinese), we call on New York City to uphold -- and improve and expand -- its sanctuary policies to build a city where no New Yorker lives in fear of deportation.
