Well-head progress update

Our well-head improvement programme has been boosted by the current water restrictions in place for Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour, as well as the cooler autumn weather which has reduced demand for water.

About 90 per cent of Christchurch’s water supply is expected to be chlorine-free by the end of next month. The entire supply is expected to be chlorine-free by spring this year.

Progress snapshot:

  • 30 per cent of supplied water is currently chlorine-free

  • 11 pump stations – out of 53 across the city – are fed by secure wells so don't need chlorine treatment

  • 42 out of 140 wells have been upgraded and signed off as secure

  • Improvement works are either under way or scheduled for a further 54 wells over the winter months.
