An update on the Woolston Village upgradeKia ora koutou and welcome to the March edition of our project newsletter for 2021. Woolston streetscape upgrade to finish in AprilWork on the multimillion-dollar upgrade of Woolston Village has been extended for one month, with contractors now expected to finish at the end of April. Christchurch City Council Transport Planning and Delivery Manager Lynette Ellis says the streetscape project, which includes installing new pedestrian crossings, mini plazas, wider footpaths, cycle lanes, and landscaping has experienced delays due to the complex nature of the work. “This is a fairly complex project involving the renewal of 100-year-old wastewater pipes and working around a network of underground services. The contractor has also had to contend with significant concrete foundations and steel tram tracks that date back to the days when trams rattled along Ferry Road towards Sumner.’’ What's happening on our work sitesTraffic signalsThe old traffic signals between the bike shop and the New World delivery exit have been permanently removed. We left them in as long as we could, but the old poles were in the location where the new kerb (gutter) is. A new signalised crossing is coming soon, between the Woolston Community Library and Bakery & Coffee on Ferry. We’re putting in the foundations for the new poles at the moment – by the time you read this email, the poles will almost be up! We realise removing the old crossing may make crossing Ferry Road difficult for some people. If you’re struggling to cross the road, please don’t hesitate to ask one of our friendly team on site to help you cross. From north to southRoadworks are, at times, a juggling act, especially at the end of a job. Sometimes work has to stop in one area so we can finish work in another to keep the whole job moving. We stopped work and tidied up our work sites on the north side of Ferry Road recently so we could shift to the south side. We did this because we needed to remove the old kerb on the south side of the street and install the new one, to get the new traffic lights in and working on time. We’ll be back on the north side of Ferry Road in early April to finish off, starting with putting in the new seating area outside Woolston Pharmacy. South side progressOn the south side of Ferry Road, we’ve removed the old kerb and have installed the new one. We’ve put in the control cabinet for the new traffic lights between the Woolston Pharmacy and Bakery & Coffee on Ferry. We are also installing the poles for the new traffic lights and building the new road shoulder (edge of the road) in preparation for road resurfacing, starting on Sunday night. On Sunday, we’ll rip up the rest of the footpath on the south side of Ferry Road and start preparing for asphalting and paving. Upcoming night works
