At least that’s the impression you get sifting through the opinions attached to the new My Health Record system. The bureaucrats are waxing lyrical, but as a public, opt-out only programme, privacy advocates are well and truly rubbed the wrong way. The one category seemingly indifferent to the fuss? The vast majority of everyone else. It seems that neither threat nor promise can sway the average man on the street from his inertia toward managing the basics of privacy in the data age. Whether that’s due to simple information overload or willful ignorance is unclear, but here’s food for thought: With attitudes like these, the really important issues surrounding data and privacy will likely be resolved by the more fervent elements at the extremes.
