Barnard College Update - Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016

Dear Claremont resident:

As we near the end of the second week of classes on the Barnard campus, we’d like to say welcome back to those of you who were away this summer. We are continuing our email updates that we began last winter and hope you will share these with new neighbors and let them know they can sign-up to receive their own emails by going to http://barnard.edu/about/teaching-learning-center. For now, expect to receive an email from us every other week. As we have in the past, we will also send special email updates should we anticipate a particularly loud day or a change in schedule.

This week we are continuing our work on the foundation phase which includes constructing the concrete footings – that part of the foundation that transfers the structural loads from the building to the Earth so the building doesn’t settle over time. Once the footings are complete, we will begin pouring the foundation walls. This is an exciting time for us because the start of the foundation phase means we are just months away from seeing the steel structure start to rise.

As we mentioned in the last email, this phase is less noisy than what we encountered earlier this year, but it may be a little louder on the days when there are concrete pours and a large influx of trucks making concrete deliveries. We will alert you when these days are happening and there will be flag-people assisting with traffic and street crossings on Claremont.

Local Law 11 Work on Hewitt and Brooks Halls

Although this work is not related to the new building construction, there have also been some inquiries about the work being done on Hewitt and Brooks Halls at the intersection of W. 116th Street and Claremont. This work – known as Local Law 11 work – is regulated by the City and requires owners to periodically ensure that the facades on their buildings do not have any loose elements (such as brick or stone) that can fall. Our Facilities Department is managing these projects, as well as many others on campus.  We anticipate this work, which is being done Monday through Saturday, will be finished by the end of October.

Construction Schedule

Our schedule will continue to be weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
