CPC Holds 6th Annual City Advocacy Day for an Inclusive Budget On April 27th, CPC held our 6th Annual City Advocacy Day, uniting over 500 community members and elected officials to advocate for policy and budget priorities that prioritize the needs of Asian American, immigrant, and low-income New Yorkers, who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. This year, CPC's policy and budget priorities include raising wages for City-contracted human services workers to $21/hour and implementing an annual Cost of Living Adjustment, expanding the AAPI Community Support initiative by allocating $7.5 million in resources to community-based organizations, among other important issues. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong.
CPC Beacon Center Partners with Bay Ridge Volleyball Club to Boost Youth Volleyball Skills CPC Beacon Center has partnered with the Bay Ridge Volleyball Club to provide top-notch volleyball training to local youth. Through this 3-month partnership, students were able to improve their skills and secure a place on their school teams. With an average attendance of 20-30 students per session, the program has given many beginners the opportunity to experience the sport for the first time while also fostering their teamwork skills in a secure environment.
CPC Youth Get a Head Start on Financial Literacy and Investment with Bank of America Workshop On April 20th, CPC’s high school and college youth visited the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park for a special tour and workshop on financial literacy and investment basics. Students were educated on how to determine their own risk tolerance and were given tips on making sound investment decisions. The workshop allowed the students to gain valuable insights on investment strategies and the importance of starting to save and invest early in life. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age.
Nan Shan Senior Center Celebrates Asian Culture Through Painting On March 31st, CPC Nan Shan Senior Center hosted an introductory workshop on Asian painting with New York City artist Jin Yong Choi for our members. This workshop was organized as part of the "What Can We Do?" initiative, which aims to support 30 artists and their creative endeavors that demonstrate care for the AAPI community in New York City, in response to the surge in anti-Asian hate and violence during the pandemic.
Brooklyn Community Center Unveils Rooftop Garden in Celebration of Earth Day On April 22nd, CPC Brooklyn Senior Services celebrated Earth Day with the opening of the rooftop garden. Members of the community gathered to partake in the planting of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. The garden was made possible through a joint effort between the center and our partners, including NYU Langone, Brooklyn Grange, and Earth Matters.
VNS Health Empowers Hong Ning Housing Older Adults Through Tai Chi On April 17th, VNS Health hosted a Tai Chi class for Hong Ning Housing older adults. The class focused on improving their posture and breathing while introducing basic self-defense moves. Participants partnered up and practiced these moves with each other, and many of them shared that they felt more confident in safeguarding themselves against potential dangers and were emboldened after learning these new skills.
CPC Promotes Intergenerational Bonding and Socialization with Outing to SEA LIFE Aquarium On April 21, 2023, CPC Hong Ning Housing and Manhattan's Learn and Earn program organized an outing to SEA LIFE Aquarium at the American Dream Mall. The trip brought together community members from different age groups, including older adults and youth, for a day of fun and bonding. The highlight of the day was a photo scavenger hunt that tested their communication skills and teamwork. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence.
CPC Joins White House Initiative to Promote Economic Equity and Justice for AA and NHPI Communities On April 11th, CPC’s Chief Development Officer, Kim To, participated in the White House Initiative Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Economic Summit in New York City at the CUNY Graduate Center. The summit played a vital role in advancing economic equity, justice, and opportunities for the AA and NHPI communities. Additionally, it provided a valuable opportunity to acquire knowledge about the various federal and state programs and resources that are available.
Wayne Ho Discusses Chinese American Needs Based on Landmark Survey of Nearly 6,500 Respondents On April 27th, Wayne Ho, President & CEO of CPC, spoke in a webinar with 600 attendees hosted by Columbia University and the Committee of 100. During the panel discussion, he shared insights on the Chinese American community based on the State of Chinese Americans Survey, which gathered data from almost 6,500 respondents across 46 states on their experiences with healthcare, education, social services, and politics. CPC played an instrumental role in facilitating the research and was the only nonprofit partner invited to speak at the event. Upcoming Opportunities / Events
