Hi Subscriber,

Welcome to our August E-bulletin. This month we wanted to share some more of our Top Tips with you, this time about writing a great C.V. to help you secure the job you want.

We also have details of upcoming training and events, in particular 'Celebrate Aston', our community fun day on Saturday 16th September, and the launch of Aston Women's Fitness and Wellbeing Club.

Keep on reading to find out more.

        1. First impressions count...

Make sure you stand out from the crowd. Employers can make decisions very quickly and may not read everything on their first glance. They may make assumptions about you straight away, so be sure to explain any gaps in your work history as well as highlight your key skills so they are clear and easy to find.

        2. Everything is job related...

The experiences you gain through life all give you skills that are valuable to employers. Even if you haven't worked for a long time you might have some great experience gained from raising your children, caring for relatives, being part of a sports club or hobbies. Be sure to include these and explain what you have learned from them.

        3. Get the basics right...

Employers receive a lot of CVs, so don't make basic mistakes. Check the spelling and grammar on your CV to avoid errors. Get the general structure right with appropriate headings, such as Profile, Key Skills, Employment, Education, Hobbies and References. Keep your CV under two pages long and keep it focused.

        4. Sell yourself...

Don’t be afraid to boast about your achievements! This is your one chance to impress. Use persuasive language that shows what you have learned and achieved. Give examples that demonstrate what you know where possible, for example if you hit sales targets include what these were.

        5. Tailor your CV...

Make sure that you tailor your CV to the job that you’re applying for and also include a cover letter tailored to the job. Each job is different and each employer will be looking for different skills and experience, so don't just send the same CV to every job, read the job advertisements and make that particular employer want to hire you!
