Spreydon-Cashmere community update - 10 February 2021

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
Happy New Year to all and welcome to the first edition of our community board newsletter for 2021. On behalf of our Board, I hope you all had a great break with friends and whānau.
There's lots coming up this year, with consultation on the Central City Parking Policy  and Oxford Terrace and City Mall now open. Consultation on the city's Draft 2021-31 Long Term Plan opens in March, so check out have your say and tell us what you think. The Report from the Climate Change Commission has implications for all of our lives and the government and local government will be responding to the responsibilities that we all have in terms of in our use of non renewable energy,  the mitigation of our  collective carbon emissions and our understanding of  the consequences of climate change for everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand. I am sure the conversations will be in our suburbs, villages and towns and our community board will be involved, just as all elected bodies will be. Summer is still in full swing, with lots of events and activities around town. From community markets to music festivals, there's lots of opportunities to get out and connect with your community. And whether you're a cycling enthusiast or new to cycling, don't forget to sign up to the Aotearoa Bike Challenge - you can sign up as an individual or part of a group, so give it a go!
Stay together, look after one another.

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Tuesday 2 February. Highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents and groups as part of our Public Forum. We heard from Jenny Goodman, Deputy Chair of Hoon Hay Community Association Trust about the development of theTrust’s Strategic Plan.
We received information from Council staff about options for new basketball courts, and we asked staff to invite local young people and other interested parties to a future meeting to tell us their views on the possibility of new courts at Somerfield and/or Centennial Parks.
We had an update Cashmere / Worsley / Hoon Hay Road - Intersection Upgrade and agreed to recommend the removal of zebra crossing road markings from the design and to approve a change in tree species from Cherry Blossoms Yoshino Cherry to native Black Beech trees.
We also received information on the proposed new mountain bike track in Montgomery Spur Reserve, which borders the Board’s area and approved a grant of $5,000 from our 2020-21 Discretionary Response Fund towards the Needs Analysis/Feasibility for the Adults Playground project.
You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here. Agendas are available online at least two business days before the next meeting. If you’d like to receive an agenda by email, please let us know.

Want to shape your place?

Check out the Shape Your Place Toolkit  – an online resource to encourage and support community-led projects that improve local neighbourhoods and commercial centres.

By working together to transform public spaces into community places, we can enhance an area and also build stronger relationships and local connections.

The toolkit contains information to help you get started; on local examples of community-led place-making projects, including the time, cost and effort involved; on helpful tools, resources and organisations; on funding sources; on obtaining any permissions, consents or approvals; and on caring for your place.

Thank you for ‘bin good’

Thanks to everyone who had ‘bin good’ in 2020 – in December we were able to recycle 84 per cent of our truckloads. We need everyone to keep up the good work this year. Download our handy bin app to get reminders on your bin day or changes to our bin service. Challenge the family and have a go with our Bin Good game. A fun way to learn what items go into what bin.
