Despite continued wrangling in Westminster over the divorce part of the Brexit negotiations, European leaders are turning their attention to the future relationship between the EU and the UK. In collaboration with our colleagues at The Conversation in France and Spain, we’ve published a roundup of perspectives from across Europe. Read the view from Germany, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy and Poland. Meanwhile, Paul James Cardwell has been reading the 26-page Political Declaration and explains what it means for the
future UK-EU relationship.
Some of William Shakespeare’s plays are extremely violent. Anyone who has seen Titus Andronicus won’t forget the grisly pie scene or the rape of Lavinia in a hurry. Yet people who suggest that it might be appropriate to include “trigger warnings” are commonly dismissed as “snowflakes”. This is unfair, writes Rebecca Yearling, who says that over the centuries many people have found Shakespeare’s violence distressing – including Samuel Johnson
who thought some of King Lear “too horrid to be endured in dramatic exhibition”.
It’s been 13 years since the rates of mental health disorders among England’s young were last surveyed by the NHS. The latest figures, revealed here by Tamsin Newlove-Delgado, show that rates have been rising. And this isn’t the only sad news about England’s young. Rates of childhood obesity have also risen, Robert Noonan reports, and children from poor neighbourhoods are the hardest hit.
