CPC Joins Just Pay Sleepout and Rally to Advocate for Human Services Workers On June 21st, several members of the CPC Leadership Team joined over 50 non-profit executive directors outside City Hall for a sleepout as part of the #JustPay campaign to advocate for a 6.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for human services workers in the final City budget. More than 300 individuals, including staff members, allies, and elected officials, gathered the following day in a Just Pay rally to show their support for human services workers, addressing the critical need for fair compensation and recognizing their contributions to society. ECLW Completes its 120-hour CDA Cohort Class in Chinese On April 29th, CPC Early Childhood Learning and Wellness Services (ECLW) trainers Sharlene, Xiao, and Matthew finished conducting the 120-hour Child Development Associate (CDA) course over a period of 17 Saturdays. The CDA national credentialing program is a professional development opportunity for early educators working with children ages birth to 5 years old and their families to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the early childhood education field.
ECLW Empowers Staff with Annual Professional Development Day On June 2nd, CPC's ECLW team held their annual department-wide professional development day, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. The event served as a platform for fostering a culture of continuous learning, empowering staff members to expand their expertise in the crucial areas of child care and mental health, and ensuring the highest quality of care and support for children and families in their community.
CDS Inspires Staff and Celebrates Growth in Heartwarming Event On May 12th, CPC Childhood Development Services Division (CDS) hosted an all-day staff appreciation event at Essex Market, celebrating CDS's evolution and growth in the field of education and paying tribute to the work of our staff. The event provided a meaningful platform to nurture a strong sense of community and exemplify the exceptional care that CPC CDS consistently offers to the children under their supervision.
Mary Cheng Honored for Transformative Impact on Underprivileged Youth On June 15th, Mary Cheng, CPC Director of Childhood Development Services, was honored at the Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth Gala, which celebrates individuals who dedicate themselves to empowering low-income youth through captivating activities such as art, dance, and physical pursuits. Through her commitment to the youth, Mary has not only shaped young minds but also fostered their self-confidence, facilitated the cultivation of friendships, and broadened their perspectives. CPC Celebrates Grand Opening of Brooklyn Older Adult Center On May 10th, CPC Brooklyn Community Center hosted a grand opening to celebrate the opening of Brooklyn Older Adult Center. From congregate meals, to educational and recreational activities, as well as case assistance services and engaging initiatives, this center is set to become a transformative hub, offering a wide range of essential services and programs designed to enhance the well-being and elevate the quality of life for older adults.
Program Director Karl Leung Recognized as YMI Coordinator of the Year On June 12th, Karl Leung, CPC LEAD (Learn. Excel. Advocate. Dream) Program Director at the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies, received the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development's Young Men's Initiative (YMI) Award in recognition of his exceptional communication and his outstanding work throughout the entire program year. He stood out as one of the two individuals awarded the title of YMI Coordinator of the Year.
CPC Teams Up with Local Partners to Provide Affordable Vegetables for the Community On June 13th, CPC teamed up with local partners in the Harvest Share program that aims to promote healthier eating habits and foster a tighter-knit community. Every week, starting from June 13th until October 31st, participants can pick up farm-fresh crops at Brooklyn Grange at reduced prices.
Nan Shan Senior Center Delights Members with Unforgettable Mother's Day Celebration On May 12th, CPC Nan Shan Senior Center held a special Mother's Day event that brought together nearly 300 members for a day filled with creativity and joy. The event featured a photo booth, where participants posed with props, capturing joyful and heartwarming moments together. The highlight of the day was a pop-up card workshop, where attendees crafted cards for their loved ones.
CPC Open Door Senior Center Fosters Intergenerational Connections Through Workshops On June 13th, CPC Open Door Senior Center partnered with the Sara Roosevelt Park Community Coalition to host a poetry and drama workshop, connecting individuals from different age groups through shared experiences and creative expression. The event welcomed 10 students aged 12-14, accompanied by their teachers from Avenues School. The students participated in meaningful conversations with older adults in Mandarin and engaged in a guessing game, where they conveyed messages through body language and facial expressions.
Brooklyn Older Adult Center Celebrates Father's Day with Food and Entertainment On June 14th, CPC Brooklyn Older Adult Center hosted a Father's Day celebration, bringing together over 230 community members and supporters. The event took place at Park Asia restaurant, where attendees enjoyed a delightful meal and performances by our older adult services teams. Wayne Ho Moderates Panel Discussion Honoring Women Leaders' Contributions in Government On May 12th, President & CEO Wayne Ho moderated a webinar on AAPI Women in Government Talk Series. The event honored women leaders who have been instrumental in advancing equality and equity in Government. It featured a keynote address by Congresswoman Grace Meng, followed by a one-on-one conversation between Wayne and Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, and a panel discussion with State Senator Iwen Chu, and Assembly Members Grace Lee, and Jenifer Rajkumar.
Alice Du and Industry Experts Share Insights on Successful Social Media Engagement On May 16th, Director of Communications Alice Du joined a panel discussion hosted by the Workforce Professionals Training Institute and shared tips on engaging participants through social media channels with city providers. She was joined by experts from Drive Change, Queens Community House, and Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation. They explored the strategies to distinguish oneself in the digital landscape, the challenges encountered when engaging participants, and more.
CPC Stands in Solidarity with Human Services Organizations on the Day Without Human Services On May 25th, CPC temporarily paused the majority of our programming and mobilized nearly 400 staff and community members to join over 5,000 individuals to advocate for better wages and benefits at the Day Without Human Services rally at City Hall. The rally served as a platform to advocate for a 6.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in the final City budget, highlighting the importance of fair compensation for those dedicated to serving the community.
Wayne Ho is Named in City and State's 2023 Power of Diversity: Asian 100 CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho was named as #21 to City & State's Power of Diversity: Asian 100. The list features Asian leaders who have made significant contributions to the Asian community in New York and have played a crucial role in amplifying the voices of Asian Americans.
CPC and Partners Unite to Celebrate AAPI Heritage at the 2nd Annual South Brooklyn AAPI Coalition Event On May 13th, CPC united with partner organizations to commemorate the vibrant and diverse AAPI heritage at the 2nd Annual South Brooklyn AAPI Coalition event, held at the New Utrecht High School. This momentous occasion brought together elected officials, honorees, community partners, and talented performers, collectively championing the advancement and celebration of our multicultural communities.
CPC Beacon Center and Community Partners Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month with Families On May 20th, CPC, the Center for Fiction, and the Brooklyn Conservatory for Music hosted a family day event at the Beacon Community Center in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month. From book readings by acclaimed children's author Grace Lin to musical performances by Annie Chen, attendees of all ages were immersed in the AAPI culture. Moreover, author and professor Ava Chin, in conversation with CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho, shed light on the Chinese American experience through her new book.
CPC Joins APA VOICE and Local Partners to Boost Voter Engagement On June 14th, CPC joined APA VOICE, local representatives, and partners to emphasize the significance of the upcoming primary elections and the importance of outreach efforts within AAPI communities. Represented by Steve Mei, Director of Brooklyn Community Services; Caroline Scown, Civic Engagement Manager; and Daniel Yan, Civic Engagement Intern, CPC shared our achievements in educating over 200 community members about the electoral process and Ranked Choice Voting.
Carlyn Cowen is Named in City and State's 2023 Power of Diversity: Pride 100 City & State NY published the "2023 Power of Diversity: Pride 100" list, and CPC's Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer, Carlyn Cowen, was named number 82. This list celebrates leaders who are actively championing LGBTQ+ rights and making a difference in our community.
