Held in the financial heart of London, the event was well attended by an audience of alumni, students and business professionals. The event sought to address the question 'What needs to change in economics and in teaching therefore in light of the 2008 financial crisis?'

Shanghai Corporate Forum: Leading Durham Academics emphasise continued opportunity for Chinese FDI into Europe

Top CITIC executive reflects on investment experience in Australia and global best practices

The event, entitled World Economic Outlook and its Impact on Chinese Investment, was aimed at the international business community and offered insights into the growth of China’s foreign direct investment (FDI) abroad, particularly in Europe. Professor Rob Dixon, opened the event with a brief presentation which covered the world economic outlook, which has altered greatly since the 2008 financial crisis, and the resulting impact and opportunity for global Chinese investment.

Scottish Referendum: Reflections on academia and public commentating by Professor Richard Harris

The impact of the Scottish referendum this September was profound.

Before re-joining Durham in September 2012, I was director of a Scottish ‘think tank’ at Glasgow University for eight years that researched and commentated extensively on Scottish economic affairs; so it was not surprising that I not only took a keen interest in the recent referendum debate, but I also contributed to it. My colleague, John Moffat, and I wrote an academic piece in July entitled "Low Productivity in Scotland, 1997-2012: implications post-2016".

'Everyone's Better Off' philosophy gives Durham student chance to influence working practises at Virgin Money

MBA student Donna Jones discusses the benefits of her Strategic Business Project at Virgin Money.

I came to the MBA with a significant amount of work experience from the public sector. Part of the programme which particularly appealed to me was the Strategic Business Project (SBP) as it offered a fantastic opportunity to complete my learning experience on a practical level. At Virgin Money I was able to apply taught theory into a genuine business issue in a completely new industry and sector. I found this thoroughly rewarding not least because the process involved collaborating with Virgin Money staff to hone the objectives of the scope.

Multiple Influences on Corporate Governance Practise in Nigeria: Agents, Strategies and Implications

Corporate governance has shown a traditional divergence between the UK/USA shareholder-dominated model and the stakeholder-centred approach more typically favoured by nations such as Germany and Japan. The former is generally (if controversially) accepted as currently dominant in terms of best international practice. But both are essentially models of developed countries – so how do they operate in developing economies?
