"The Talk"

You know you'll have the opportunity one day ...  are you ready?
Here are several (seven) facts that most young women don't know.

1. There's no easy answer to unplanned pregnancy.
2. You do not have to choose between abortion and (single) parenting.
3. Adoption does not mean saying goodbye to your child forever.
4. Most adoptions these days are "open", and there are many degrees of "openness".
5. It's true that you could actually select parents for your baby.
6. There are many loving couples who are ready, willing and able to give your child a great home.
7. Adoption *is* an option for you.

Be ready to share the above facts when you find out that a young woman in your community is facing an unplanned pregnancy.

If you can get her to consider looking into adoption, please send her to our site where she can read actual stories
-  from birthmoms,
-  from adoptees, and
-  from adoptive parents.
Allow her to be encouraged by you and by the truth about open adoption today.

The most important conversation you can imagine!  Most young women choose between abortion and single parenting because they don't realize there's another option. Yet they are 50% more likely to choose adoption if an adult close to them advocates for it. Be prepared to discuss this.  You can help change the adoption dialogue and equip her to choose adoption.

Adoption Today and Unplanned Pregnancy

More than 50 years ago, 95 percent of unmarried teen mothers placed their children for adoption (Resnick, 1992). Today, that number is under 2% nationwide, under 1% in California:  less than 2% of young women facing unplanned pregnancy choose adoption.  The vast majority either abort or become (often single) parents.

Let's change that!  Really, it's up to us.

Explaining Openness in Adoption to those who might not 'get it'

"Open adoption does not take away from the adoptive family. It adds to the relationship with your child. It gives more than it takes. It is hard yet beautiful, for everyone. But mostly, it keeps adoption focused on the most important person, your child."

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Less than 2% of women facing unplanned pregnancy make an adoption plan?
  • When they do, it's because an adult in their life encouraged them to consider adoption?
  • There are over one million couples in the U.S. waiting now to adopt?

Why are we doing this?
Young women are 50% MORE likely to make an adoption plan when the trusted adult in their life suggests it to them. Otherwise, most girls don't give it a thought, and choose between abortion or single parenting. That's why we need to get this on the radar of more people.
