Anton will work with the Privacy Commissioner to strengthen safeguards around the integrity, management and use of government held data, and with the list of government data privacy challenges constantly growing, it will be a big job. But, as Jonathan Cotton notes, simplification of the more than 500 privacy and secrecy provisions which currently exist across Australia’s government departments can only be good news. With estimates of open government data generating up to $25 billion in new careers, more efficient government revenues, improved business practices and better public engagement the stakes are large.
