Coastal-Burwood Community News - 9 December 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
Saturday 5 December was International Volunteers Day and a time to give thanks to all our wonderful volunteers for the work they do in our community.
The recent hot days have given us a taste of the summer to come, as well as a timely reminder to conserve water. The Council's new "Water like you oughta” water conservation campaign has some good tips about how best use water at home.
If you're up for a challenge, check out Council's new Bin Good Game and test your knowledge of what items belong in your red, yellow and green wheelie bins. It's a fun way to tackle a serious issue and help minimise the amount of waste going to landfill.
We've held our last Board meeting of the year and will be reconvening in the New Year to continue the positive momentum in our community. Although this year has brought some challenges, it's also brought opportunities, and I've shared my thoughts on this below. On behalf of the Board, we wish you all happy and safe holidays.
Stay together, look after one another.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Kelly Barber

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Monday 7 December. Some highlights included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum. It was great to hear from members of our community who recently received funding for their projects. We approved plans to relocate the bus stop outside The Palms on New Brighton Road, to provide a more sheltered and pleasant place for commuters to wait for the bus. We also considered options for No Stopping Restrictions on Whitau Place, located within the Prestons subdivision in Marshland.

Our Board granted a lease to Eastern Community Sports and Recreation Incorporated (ECSR) who will run and manage the Ascot Community Centre as a community facility on behalf of Christchurch City Council. We granted funding for community projects to the St Kentigerns Burwood United Presbyterian Church and the Grace Vineyard Christian Fellowship from our 2020/21 Discretionary Response Fund. We also received the December Community Board Area Report which gives us an overview of all the great things going on in our community.

This was our last Community Board meeting for 2020 and you can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

A look back at 2020 and forward to 2021

* Written by Kelly Barber, Chair of the Coastal-Burwood Community Board

Over the last 12 months your Waitai/Coastal-Burwood Community board has been thrilled to see a large number of positive steps forward in our area. The City Council has invested heavily in our area.

He Puna Taimoana has been a great success and is well ahead of forecast visitor numbers. (Even without overseas visitors) The New Brighton Clocktower repair and upgrade is completed, the Marine Parade Street scaping is finished and looking fantastic and the revamped Whale Pool and Playground are alive with families on weekends and some evenings.

With Government ‘Shovel Ready’ funding help for Eastern Sports canopy Project and other projects in the Rawhiti Domain, two Surf Club rebuilds, and the new South New Brighton ‘Hub’ Community Centre near completion, there is much to be grateful for.

Council also passed unanimously a series of resolutions to help see the 2015 New Brighton Master Plan pushed on toward completion.

Of course there is always more work to do, but we must celebrate the successes along the way.

Over the next year we’ll see the start of work on the Waitaki Street Stopbank and Wetland Project and decisions on funding for work to finish the Estuary Edge Earthquake legacy project and our other priority project the Pages road New Brighton Bridge and approaches. There will be some other roading improvements along the way.

This is only a small snapshot of the great things happening in our area, the most diverse, beautiful and exciting part of our wonderful city.
