What does it take to keep a drink container out of the ocean? About 10 cents. That’s according to researchers at CSIRO, who have found that deposit schemes in Australia and the US reduce drink containers on the coast by 40%.
The schemes are particularly effective in poorer areas, which are also the places with the most plastic litter. This proof of success is great news for Australia, considering that within 18 months, Tasmania and Victoria will be the only states without container deposit programs.

Drink containers end up in the ocean at a truly alarming rate. Simply paying people a small amount to return them cuts that rate by nearly half.
