Cultural Learning Alliance: Culture Vote 2015

The Cultural Learning Alliance have released a statement about their work this year pushing for cultural learning to be included in the party manifestos being prepared for the May 2015 general election.

Working with members of a steering group they have developed five key actions government could take that we think would go a long way towards delivering a high quality cultural education for all children.

The future of new music is at risk if we continue to undervalue composers

Professional composers are being asked to create new pieces for ‘shockingly low’ fees, Sound and Music report finds.

"If we believe that music is a living artform then it stands to reason that the creation of new music is vital to its current and future health. However, professional composers are being asked to create new music for very little money in conditions that are too often inadequate. As a sector we have some hard questions to ask ourselves about our priorities."

New opportunity - Young Core Leaders of Civil Society Group Development Programme
Department for Education publish reforms for children with SEN and disabilities

The biggest education reforms in a generation for children and young people with special educational needs became law on Monday 1 September.

The new system will extend rights and protection to young people by introducing a new education, health and care plan. Professionals will also provide more tailored support to families, giving them the help and assistance they need.

Low grades lead to abandoned ambitions, say Prince's Trust

New research by The Prince’s Trust has found that 1/5 of young people who achieved less than 5 A*- C grades at GCSE have ‘abandoned’ their ambitions because of their results. One in six young people also believe they will ‘end up on benefits’ for at least part of their life.

The research surveyed 2, 342 young people aged 16-25 about their feelings surrounding exam results and concluded that those with fewer than five A* to C grade GCSEs were far more likely to have fears and worries about their future. 26% of these young people felt that their exam results will always hold them back compared to only 10% of those who got higher grades.

Amateurs match up in the eyes of audiences

Amateur performances, while not quite as highly rated as their professional counterparts, are not widely different from them in terms of the experiences they deliver to audiences, according to a new report revealing how audiences value amateur, subsidised and commercial dance and theatre.
