CHS: Inspiring girls to discover and pursue their personal exellence.

Junior School Conference Booking Opens Tuesday

Please mark your calendar for Junior School student-led conferences on Wednesday, March 11. Booking for conferences will open at 9:00 am on Tuesday, February 25.

Join the CHS Walk in Her Shoes Team

The whole school community is invited to join Crofton House School’s team at the CARE Canada Walk in Her Shoes event on Sunday, March 8. This family-friendly event begins with a kick-off at Creekside Community Recreation Centre from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. Starting at 10:00 am, participants will walk 10,000 steps, the number of steps that represents the typical distance girls and women in developing countries have to travel each day to collect essentials for survival like firewood and water – tasks that often prevent girls from being able to attend school. All funds raised will go towards CARE Canada's Malawi project supporting healthy moms and babies. View more information about this initiative. The event is free for youth under 17 and $25 for those over 17. Join the team.

Senior School Production: Mamma Mia! Tickets On Sale

Join the cast of Mamma Mia! as they perform an enchanting tale of dreams, love, laughter, and friendship - all to the pop melodies of ABBA's timeless hits. The show runs from Thursday, March 5 to Saturday, March 7. The Friday, March 6 show is a special sing-along performance. You can dance, you can jive, and have the time of your life, singing out your favourite tunes alongside the dancing queens themselves! Purchase tickets.

Register for the Mother-Daughter “Disco” Dance

The CHS Parents’ Auxiliary invites families from Grade 1 and up to register for a night of dancing at this year’s disco-themed Mother-Daughter Dance on Tuesday, March 10. Be prepared to boogie in your finest 70s-themed outfits and enjoy a night of food, fun, and friends. The deadline for registration is March 2. Donations of prizes and cash are always appreciated and can be dropped off at the Junior School office until March 4. Register for the dance.

A Magical Afternoon in the ECE Centre

The ECE Centre had a Tea Party with Disney princess Elsa who led students (and staff!) in a sing-along of everyone’s favourite songs from Frozen. When asked if she had learned to control her superpower, Elsa responded that she had and shared something her good friend Cinderella told her, “the most powerful superpower of all is kindness!”

Storm Drain Cleaning

As part of the Ivy Compass program and their salmon unit, Grade 2 students participated in the annual tradition of cleaning the storm drains around the school as they are connected to salmon habitats.

Soapstone Carving

Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 4 students participated in a soapstone carving workshop with a professional artist from Studiostone Creative. Students learned how to shape the stone with files and how to polish it with different types of sandpaper. The artist then applied heat and wax to the carving to create the finished pieces. Each grade carved shapes that were connected to their learning. Grade 1 carved heart shapes for February heart month, Grade 2 carved fish shapes for their salmon unit, and Grade 4 (pictured) carved animals in connection with animals living in their biome and the importance of maintaining First Peoples culture.

Silicon Valley Tech Trek

Students traveled to California for a “Silicon Valley Tech Trek'' major trip for Grade 9-12 students. Their first stop was in Santa Clara at the Levi’s Stadium, home of the 49ers football team, where students participated in the 49ers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Education Program. The program hosts a unique stadium tour where students learn the ways that STEAM is used in football. Students participated in a design challenge to prototype football shoulder pads for women.

The next stop was in Mountain View, California at the Google X headquarters to meet Emily Ma ‘99. Emily won the 2019 Alumnae Junior Achievement Award for her outstanding accomplishments in science, technology, and engineering and hosted students on their tour of Google X. She showed the students Google innovations such as the Waymo self-driving car that uses LIDAR technology to navigate, the evolution of Google Glasses, and WiFi balloons that provide internet access to rural and remote areas. And that was all just in the first day!

CHS Exchange Program

During their exchange, students will be writing guest blogs for the school website. This week, two Grade 10 students Lucy and Lexie share their experience at St. Margaret’s School in Brisbane, Australia.

Art Students visit the Mamma Mia! Set

Grade 8 students were given a sneak peak of the Mamma Mia! set to learn what goes into the design and production of a musical. Mr. Tugwell, A/V Manager and Technician at CHS, walked students through sound and lighting while professional set designer Jessica Oostergo gave students insight into the process and tools she uses to design a set, such as making a 3D prototype.

Lunch & Learn Design Lab

Senior School students dropped into a Lunch and Learn in the design lab and made light-up LED pins.

Courage, Creativity, Citizenship

Service Together

As part of the CHS Parents’ Auxiliary’s Service Together initiative, Senior School students and parents met on campus this week to prepare some nutritious meals and snacks.

Senior School families also packaged the meals and snacks, delivering them for the weekend to local centres assisting people facing food insecurity.

A sincere thank you Cooking for a Cause and to the many volunteers who took part in this week’s Service Together event.
