Some highlights of our meeting included electing Michelle Lomax as our new Deputy Chairperson. We also heard from local residents as part of our Public Forum and Deputations by Appointment. Community support smooths path for Moncks BayThe final link in Te Ara Ihutai Christchurch Coastal Pathway is a step closer following strong community support for the proposed design and a lower speed limit in Main Road, Redcliffs. An update on the Woolston Village upgradeThe project team are pleased to report that work is steadily trucking along the north side of Woolston Village. Not only has the weather been great, so has the wonderful Woolston community. Ice blocks and water on searingly hot days, encouraging words and friendly chats – it all helps. We'd like to remind people to use the dedicated pedestrian crossings to cross Ferry Road safely. Thank you, Woolston! Celebrate at Estuary FestCome along to Estuary Fest and celebrate our estuary environment and the communities surrounding it. Join us at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre on Saturday 27 February for a fun day with bumper boats, crazy bikes, bouncy castles and pony rides, as well as food trucks and music. Aotearoa Bike ChallengePump those tires! Aotearoa Bike Challenge 2021 began on 1 February. This fun and free competition is all about biking alongside your workmates, friend groups and community! Every ride counts so jump on a bike, earn points and climb the leader board this February. There’s a bunch of prizes up for grabs including movie, theatre and festival passes, mountain bike bundles, bouldering and yoga passes, delicious meal boxes and much more. Make your place fire safeThe recent hot weather, high winds and fires in Christchurch are reminder for people to make sure their properties are fire safe this summer, especially our Port Hills communities who live in semi-rural settings. The Fire and Emergency New Zealand website have some good tips on what you can do keep your home and community safe from fire. Cheque payments coming to an endChristchurch City Council is stopping cheques as a payment option. Residents will no longer be able to make cheque payments from 30 April 2021, due to the three major New Zealand banks phasing them out in May, June and July of this year. Come along to our next Central City Residents ForumOur community board would like invite representatives from the Central City and City Fringe Resident & Neighbourhood Groups to attend an upcoming residents forum. This invitation is also being extended to residents who live in the central city and want to find out more information on: The Draft Central City Parking Policy This will be held on Thursday 18 of February 2021, 5.45pm-7.30pm, in the Function Room, First Floor Civic Offices (53 Hereford Street). Vegan Night Mākete (market)Come along to the Christchurch Vegan Society's regular Vegan Night Mākete on the last Saturday of every month and check out the best local plant-based foods and goods, learn about environmental/animal welfare and the health benefits of veganism. A great opportunity to get together with your local vegan community. Linwood Village MarketCome and do your Saturday shopping with us at the Linwood Village Market. Our community market promotes re-using, recycling and upcycling - and sells new stuff too. Mosque: Faith, Culture, CommunityDiscover the mosque at the heart of communities, and the diversity of Islamic culture showcased through art and objects. Stage one of new Sydenham housing development opensThe first stage of a new community housing development has opened in Sydenham. Korimako Lane has 28 new Homestar 7 homes and is part of a 90 home community housing complex that the Ōtautahi Community Trust (OCHT) is building on the old Brougham Village site in Sydenham where 98 homes were demolished following the earthquakes. Food for thought at Grow Ōtautahi Garden FestivalChristchurch’s home-grown garden festival, Grow Ōtautahi, offers a three-day feast of food, design, outdoor living and sustainability in March. Set in the Botanic Gardens, the free festival will feature a host of top chefs from around the region who will share their culinary skills. Festival goers will also be able to sample locally sourced food, explore innovative landscape design and take part in workshops and masterclasses. Favourite parks in frame for young video creatorsAre you a budding film-maker aged between 7 and 12? Share your favourite outdoor space or park with us by creating a 60-second video to celebrate Parks Week. The best video will win a family zipline experience at the Christchurch Adventure Park while family pool passes are also on offer. Parks Week will be held from 6 to 14 March. Council offers students hands-on learning opportunitiesChristchurch school students will get hands-on lessons this year on how to minimise their waste thanks to a free Learning Through Action programme run by Christchurch City Council. Plan focuses on making better use of community facilitiesA new network plan is set to make it easier for local Community Boards and Christchurch City Council to make decisions about community facilities across the city and how they are run. Feedback wanted on central city parking approachChristchurch City Council is encouraging people to give their feedback on a proposed new policy that aims to ensure we have the right mix of parking in the central city.
