The annual FileMaker geek-fest known as DevCon recently wrapped up its 17th edition in Miami, Florida, from July 16-19. DevCon featured over 70 sessions, a vast exhibitor showcase where you could talk to vendors, several social events, and a beach only a short walk from the hotel.

Over 1,200 people from more than 30 countries gather to discover what’s new in FileMaker. There are under-the-hood sessions from FileMaker engineers, discussions on coding practices and documentation, scripting methods and new calculations, FileMaker Go and much, much more. It’s an event that anyone with an interest in FileMaker should attend at least once. Read more.

As a FileMaker developer with a focus on delivery of high-value solutions as quickly as possible, I always look for ways to enhance my development environment to optimize speed and efficiency. Here are just a few of the resources (i.e. application windows) I need at my disposal: Read more.

The Power of Insert from URL

by Anders Monsen

When FileMaker Pro 12 launched earlier this year, it seemed that most attention centered on a new layout design surface and the ExecuteSQL function. One example of ExecuteSQL emerged at DevCon 2012: Inspector 4.0, a database analysis tool created in FileMaker, dropped the number of table occurrences from 626 to 135 and the number of relationships from 591 to 81, largely through the use of ExecuteSQL.

Yet there is another feature of FileMaker Pro 12 with vast power, at least in terms of integrating with external applications: the “Insert from URL” script step. In previous versions of FileMaker Pro, interacting with web sites to pull data required a method called web scraping. This usually meant loading a web page in the web viewer, using the function GetLayoutObjectAttribute inside a script to pull the HTML source (after waiting to make sure the page loaded all the way in the web viewer), and then parsing the HTML with text functions. Virtual World Operations

Header

by Susan Fennema

Think of all those times that it was GORGEOUS outside and you were stuck inside – in your cubicle – with fluorescent lighting, the white noise of hushed conversations blending with the sound of computer keyboard clicking and the occasional phone ringing, with no window to the outside world. Drudgery.

MightyData is blessed to be a virtual company. We don’t have an office to go to if we wanted. So, how do you run a business when your employees are in Gainesville, San Antonio, Chicago and McKinney, and your leader is in Allen, Texas? You just tap into modern-day technology. Read more.
