BLOG | ADCS President speaks on the increase of vulnerable young asylum-seekers

"What has perhaps been less prominent in recent coverage is that almost a third of those arriving are unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. Most of these children are 15, 16 or 17, but some are as young as 12. This is deeply concerning as all of these children are extremely vulnerable.

Many have lost those closest to them and have been forced to flee from atrocities in their home countries. And all of them have made dangerous journeys through several countries to arrive here. During the course of these journeys, they have been at risk of abuse and exploitation and their lives have been genuinely in danger."

How to...make the most of your academic creativity

"Some people quite clearly fit in one box or other, many fall somewhere in between. Schools can often try to push you in one clear direction, signing your life (and talents) away from an early age.

If you're academic but also love getting up on stage, you shouldn't feel the need to make that choice.

Ensure that your subject choices are well balanced and you'll leave all doors open to yourself, some creative, some academic, many that satisfy both. Remember, creative subjects shouldn't be treated as 'weaker' subjects, and a good balance will ensure that you're noticed by all, no matter which direction you decide to take your career in."
