89XXXhibition: A Reconnaissance into Las Vegas Community

Explore the many communities that make up Las Vegas at the UNLV Barrick Museum. Organized in partnership with Yelp.com, the juried exhibition “89XXXhibition: A Reconnaissance into Las Vegas Community” presents 22 local artists’ interpretations of the communities where they live, work, and play, celebrating the diversity of the Las Vegas Valley. The show opens May 20 and will run until July 9.

The exhibition marks a unique collaboration between the museum and web-based Yelp. “For Yelp, supporting the local community goes hand in hand with providing a spot for people to discover fabulous Vegas businesses, and the programming at the Barrick does so much to foster the cultural and community spirit of our town,” says Misti Yang, Yelp’s Las Vegas Community Manager. “I knew together we could create something that would shine a big light on both our community and art.”

Countenance: Self Portraits by Jerry Shawback

Countenance: Self-Portraits by Jerry Shawback will be on display at the UNLV Barrick Museum May 20 - July 2, 2011. The artist’s self-portrait series explores identity through multiple approaches to the same subject matter. Stylistically varied, they reveal the strange and vulnerability essence of the human condition. "Self portraits have the inherent ability to expose the depth and breadth of human nature.” says Shawback. Countenance consists of 9 paintings and drawings and will be on display in the Museum’s Community Gallery.

Sereno: Paintings and Sculpture by KD Matheson

The UNLV Barrick Museum presents Sereno, featuring the work of Las Vegas artist KD Matheson. Expressing a unique vision through a wide variety of mediums including clay, paint, computer-generated art, animation, and film, Matheson’s surreal creations beckon viewers into a mythic, primordial world of the fantastic. “I tend to think of my work as a meeting place,” say the artists, “a bridge in space-time that blends the past and the future and is expressed into the present.” Sereno includes sculpted masks and totems as well as paintings by the artist. The show will open May 20, 2011 and run through July 2, 2011 in the Museum’s Community Gallery.
