Helping to enhance the safety of Juno Beach ![]() September 12, 2024 - Volume 7 Number 16 A Day of Reflection: NYPD Chief’s Powerful Message of Brotherhood at 9/11 Event
Retired NYPD Deputy Chief Rey Mundo began his heartfelt speech at the Juno Beach September 11th Remembrance Event with a powerful reference to John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." He reminded the audience that this scripture perfectly encapsulates the selfless actions of our brothers and sisters on September 11th, 2001. On that fateful day, many brave souls made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives to save others in an act of profound courage and love. Chief Mundo, who was personally involved in the police operations at Ground Zero for an extended period, paid tribute to the 343 firefighters, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as the 2,977 victims, including those aboard the four hijacked planes. He also honored the thousands who have since died from illnesses related to their exposure to the aftermath of the attacks, recognizing that the impact of September 11th continues to be felt by many. Chief Mundo emphasized that each of these individuals displayed extraordinary acts of heroism, courage, fortitude, and selflessness. He reminded the crowd that their sacrifices must never be forgotten, passionately urging that if we are to remain the land of the free, we must continue to be the home of the brave. He then saluted our military members, both veterans and those currently serving, for their unwavering courage and dedication. He recognized the sacrifices they make to protect our nation and keep us safe, both at home and around the world. In a heartfelt expression of gratitude, Chief Mundo also acknowledged the families who lost a parent, child, friend, or co-worker on September 11th, recognizing that they, too, bear the weight of this tragedy. He honored them for enduring the loss of the most treasured people in their lives. Chief Mundo went on to salute the two Juno Beach Police Chaplains as well as the many clergy members across this great nation who provide daily comfort, reassurance, and faith to first responders. Their spiritual support, he said, is vital in fortifying those who protect and serve. In closing, Chief Mundo reminded everyone, 'No act of terror can match the strength and character of our country and our first responders.' He expressed his deep gratitude to all present, as well as to the members of the Juno Beach Police Department and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, for the opportunity to share his personal experiences and reflections. This year's Remembrance Event was a deeply moving occasion that united community members, first responders, and local leaders in a shared spirit of reflection and honor. The soulful performances by the bagpiper and vocalist, who delivered renditions of the National Anthem, Amazing Grace, and the Star-Spangled Banner, added a profound layer to the ceremony, enhancing the emotional resonance of the day. These musical tributes, along with the powerful presentations and moments of silence, left a lasting impression on all who attended. The Juno Beach Police Foundation is grateful to everyone who participated and helped make the event a poignant tribute to those we lost and a reminder of the enduring strength and resilience of our nation.
