Mayor Adams Makes a Surprise Visit to CPC Chinatown Older Adult Center On July 12th, Mayor Eric Adams visited CPC Chinatown Older Adult Center, reaffirming his strong support for the aging community. The mayor spoke with staff and community members, listened to their concerns and aspirations, and shared valuable resources. His visit further strengthened the bond between older adults and city leadership, reinforcing CPC's commitment to keeping them engaged and valued. CPC's partnership with the NYC Department for the Aging positively benefits over 1,000 older adults daily across four centers in Chinatown, Sunset Park, and Flushing. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong.
CPC Congratulates Preschool Graduates on their Journey to Success CPC celebrated the Class of 2023 across our preschools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Amid cheers and applause, our little graduates stepped into a new chapter of their educational journey. Congratulations to our young achievers and their families!
Deputy Mayor Almanzar and DYCD Commissioner Howard Visit CPC's Summer Rising Program at PS130 On July 7th, Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives Ana Almanzar and NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Keith Howard paid a special visit to our Summer Rising Program at PS130 and interacted with participants and staff. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age.
CPC and Community Partners Host Live Concert for Over 250 Older Adults On July 8th, CPC collaborated with Homecrest Community Services, South Brooklyn Community Coalition, and the United Chinese Association of Brooklyn to organize a live concert for over 250 older adults. Community members were deeply moved by Joyous Band's performance, which featured over 40 timeless classics. Senator Iwen Chu also joined the festivities and celebrated the love of music alongside the community.
CPC Brooklyn Older Adult Center Hosts 'Talent is Timeless’ Competition On July 13th, CPC Brooklyn Older Adult Center hosted its first 'Talent is Timeless' competition. The event was part of the New York City Department for the Aging's new initiative to recognize and celebrate the diverse talent among the older adult community. Over 40 community members participated and showcased their incredible abilities across various disciplines, including singing, dancing, instrumental performances, martial arts, and more. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. CPC Statement on the NYC FY 23-24 Adopted Budget On June 30th, New York City passed a $107 billion budget for FY24. CPC acknowledges and commends the City Council for restoring major cuts to social services proposed in the Executive Budget. However, we are deeply disappointed that the critical investments needed to sustain the human services workforce were left out of the budget, and that while restorations were made, the budget failed to invest deeply in the social safety net, education, housing, and the resources necessary to support Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), immigrant, and low-income communities.
CPC Advocacy Advisory Council Hosts Appreciation Lunch to Celebrate Advocacy Achievements with Staff On July 7th, CPC’s Advocacy Advisory Council hosted an appreciation lunch to recognize and celebrate the hard work and efforts of our staff in promoting equity and raising awareness in the community. From creating advocacy posters to speaking at rallies, staff members have been committed to driving positive change in our community through both words and actions.
CPC Speaks at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior Conference in Washington, DC On July 23rd, Steve Mei, Director of CPC Brooklyn Community Services, spoke on a panel at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior (SNEB) Conference in Washington DC as part of the Harvest Share partnership. Steve highlighted the importance of providing culturally sensitive food options to the immigrant community in Sunset Park.
CPC Partners with Mobility LABs and Blue Ridge Labs to Enhance Youth Mental Health Services On July 5th, CPC's Infant-Toddler Youth Mental Health Services, Mobility LABs, and Blue Ridge Labs welcomed a new cohort of fellows at Robin Hood. Their collective goal this year is to empower underprivileged children with tech-based and community-driven solutions for better health and mental well-being. CPC's staff highlighted how they effectively implement culturally competent and linguistically accessible services for the children and providers they serve.
CPC Joins New York State's Anti-Stigma Campaign to Promote Inclusivity CPC joined the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities on a new campaign to combat discrimination and stigma faced by individuals with developmental disabilities. Among the inspiring stars featured in the "Look Beyond My Developmental Disability" campaign is CPC's Respite Coordinator, Jessica Hsieh. Our Queens and Brooklyn Special Needs programs also played an important role in shaping the initiative through meaningful focus group discussions.
CPCHAP Welcomes New Board Member Benjamin Eng The Chinese-American Planning Council Home Attendant Program Inc. (CPCHAP), a subsidiary nonprofit organization of CPC, is pleased to announce the appointment of Benjamin Eng, MD, MA to its Board of Directors. Benjamin is President of the EastBridge Foundation where he has led impactful projects in partnership with nonprofits including CPC.
