Angela Merkel has announced that she will not stand for re-election as chancellor of Germany in 2021 and will not stand again as leader of her party in December. This follows a bad night in regional elections in the state of Hesse and, as Dan Hough writes, an acceptance that the Merkel brand just isn’t what it was as a vote winner.
