Papanui-Innes community update - 25 September 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
We're back to alert level one and it's business as usual again at Christchurch City Council’s public facilities. It's daylight savings time and the longer days are great for getting out in the garden or doing some DIY around the house. If you're looking for things to do over school holidays, there's a range of events and activities to keep the kids entertained.
The Council are seeking community views on a range of topics, from short term accommodation to how we use our community spaces and facilities. If you haven't already, I encourage you to check out the Council's Have your Say page and share your views.
Keep being  kind and look after one another. Kia kaha.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Emma Norrish

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Friday 18 September. Some highlights of our meeting approving funding for a number of community projects, including a grant of $1,500 from our 2020-21 Discretionary Response Fund to the St Albans Community Centre towards the costs of their centre opening. We also approved a grant of $150 ($50 each) from its 2020-21 Youth Development Fund to Maru Kenshikai Kendo Club towards Leia Bayliss, Junya Sawasaki, and Emma Tamaki attending the Rembuden Kendo Taikai Championship in Wellington on 3 to 4 October 2020. The Board also approved no stopping restrictions on the south side of Prestons Road between Marshland Rd and Hills Rd/Hawkins Road and received a letter from local resident Katrina Gosney about the no stopping report. You can check out the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes  Community Board Facebook page for more information, read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

Shirley  space use centres on community views

Local residents can help realise the potential of the former Shirley Community Centre site by sharing their ideas for the open space.
Waipapa/Papanui Innes Community Board Chairperson Emma Norrish says the community suggestions can also help inform consultation on Christchurch’s Long Term Plan (LTP).
“Our community needs a cohesive voice when advocating for project funding under the LTP, and support for a revamp of the Shirley site is on our wish list,” Ms Norrish says.

Paparoa School students get planting  in Rutland Reserve

Paparoa School students had a great time with Christchurch City Council's Parks team earlier this month. Here are some words the from Kārearea shared for the newsletter."

"Our school is full of Change Makers including us, so on Tuesday the 8th we got a chance to prove it! We planted in Rutland Reserve so that we can help our native things such as trees, bugs and birds. We aren’t the Guardians of the Galaxy but the Guardians of the Reserve."

"Squelch, squelch, squelch! Rangi Hapū’s feet walked down through the Reserve. Each of our classes Tūī, Kārearea and Takahē took turns to be volunteer rangers for the day planting and taking care of our reserve."

"The weather on the day was wild, sunny with a soft, Easterly breeze that balanced it out and made it mild. For this weather we needed to wear our jackets, sunhats, gumboots and sunblock!"

"We got help from Yvette and Sarah, the Council Park Rangers. They had an enormous trailer with plants and tools for our task."

The local community have an opportunity to get planting in nearby Cranford Basin next month.
To join the first public planting of what will one day be the largest stand of kahikatea in Otautahi-Christchurch since pre-European times, please see here.

Have your say on how we use community facilities

We want to support the network of community centres and halls across Christchurch city and Banks Peninsula so these spaces are well used, and people come together there for lots of different activities. So we’ve come up with a Plan - and we'd love to hear your views.
Consultation on the Council's Community Facilities Network Plan is open until 14 October 2020.
