The importance of an Indigenous Coach

One of the outcomes of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is that many non-Indigenous Canadians are doing some serious soul searching to determine what they personally can do to support reconciliation. Today in The Conversation Canada, Emily Milne of MacEwan University writes eloquently and honestly about how teachers need help to do their part. “Our task is to ensure that students have a respectful understanding of Indigenous peoples and perspectives…. But, as teachers, how do we do this? Where do we go for support?” Her research – and her own personal experience – shows that non-Indigenous teachers who work with an “Indigenous coach” do a better job of incorporating meaningful and authentic Indigenous content into their teaching.

After reading Sylvain Charlebois’ article today, I want to move to Ann Arbor, Mich. That’s because in that city, Dominos and Ford are running a joint pilot project where driverless cars are delivering pizza. How cool is that? Prof. Charlebois, a Dalhousie University expert on food distribution and policy, looks at all the business and social implications if the food industry is able to perfect driverless delivery.

Like most people who live in Toronto, I never make it to TIFF – the Toronto International Film Festival. Instead, I read the reviews of those who do go and then wait to see the best films when they enter wide distribution. Based on a great article today by Anthony Bonato, a professor of mathematics at Ryerson University, I’ve got two must-see films on my list: The Current War and The Shape of Water. As Prof. Bonato points out, Hollywood has embraced many STEM-centric (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) movies over the last few years.
