Highlight: STEM Faculty Launch Program at WPI


Get a leg up on launching your academic career with STEM Faculty Launch, a two-day workshop covering best practices for pursuing, applying for, and establishing faculty careers.

This brand new workshop, based at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), is open to candidates nationwide. Women and traditionally underrepresented minority candidates are especially encouraged to apply. Participants will attend a variety of interactive sessions and gain exposure to project-based learning. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Preparing for the academic job hunt
  • Telling your story through public speaking and social media
  • Preparing your teaching statement with evidence-based teaching practice
  • Designing an effective research statement
  • Preparing for the on-campus interview
  • Writing successful grants
  • Negotiating for a tenure-track position

Funding is available to invited attendees to cover travel expenses, lodging, and meals during the workshop. The application deadline is August 15, 2015; for more information and to apply to attend, please visit the program's website.

Postdoc Opportunity

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology & Biochemistry - Brown University - Providence, RI

A postdoctoral position is available in the Lapierre lab in the department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Brown University (For more info: https://vivo.brown.edu/display/llapierr). Our research program is focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of aging and longevity by studying the transcriptional and metabolic regulation of proteostatic processes, including the autophagy-lysosomal pathway. Our ultimate goal is to find solutions to prevent age-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, ALS, etc.) and metabolic diseases (fatty liver, obesity, etc.).

Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or related field. Experience with C. elegans is an asset. Proficiency in spoken and written English is necessary; great communication and teamwork skills are essential; advanced analytical and conceptual skills are requisite. Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor - The Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies - University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

The Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies seeks outstanding candidates for tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor to complement existing strengths in molecular/physiological aspects of aging. The Institute is particularly interested in candidates whose research foci include mechanistic aspects related to the biology of aging and age-related diseases. Areas of interest include intracellular signaling pathways, genetic and epigenetic regulation, mitochondrial biology, cellular senescence, stem cells, interventions that affect aging, and bioinformatics; however, other areas of aging research will be considered. The successful applicant is expected to maintain a vigorous, extramurally funded research program at the Barshop Institute as well as participate in graduate student training and didactic education in the Biology of Aging program.

The Barshop Institute hosts a Training Program (T32) in the Biology of Aging, a Nathan Shock Center of Excellence, a Claude D. Pepper (OAIC) Center and a testing site for the NIA Interventions Testing Program.
