The Panel noted the 1970’s theme however determined that presenting smoking in a positive or aspirational way in a current advertisement is contrary to prevailing community standards on health and safety and in breach of Section 2.6 of the AANA Code of Ethics. Content rules for wagering advertisingWhile spring racing has seen a seasonal increase in wagering adverts, the AANA Wagering Advertising Code which controls the content of ads promoting betting on the races remains the same. Concerns about ad content breaching the Code can be lodged with Ad Standards. End of the road for sexist slogans on Vic vehiclesCrude and sexist slogans on vehicles in Victoria will be history following new legislation forcing vehicle owners that display offensive images or slogans to remove them or face registration sanctions. Under the legislation, any Victorian registered vehicle with sexist, obscene or offensive displays can be referred to the Ad Standards Community Panel. If the Community Panel finds the message breaches community standards in line with the AANA Code of Ethics, it must be removed or the vehicle’s registration will be cancelled - consistent with laws already in Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT. Competitor complaint upheldA reminder from a recent determination by the Ad Standards Industry Jury that advertisers should be able to substantiate their advertising and marketing claims across all forms of their advertising material, including on their website and social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.
