Letter from the Director

We are half-way through the first semester of this academic year, with a wonderful student staff, many of whom are working at SDWC for the first time. Many have spent hours in the center before—studying or visiting or coming to programs—and we are happy to welcome them here in a new way. We also are grateful to our returning staff for their commitment and expertise.

It is especially important this semester that our staff is so talented, creative, and dependable because we had to say goodbye in early October to our incomparable assistant director, Felicia Salinas-Moniz, when she moved on to become the director of the women’s resource center at the University of California Riverside. Felicia truly helped make Sarah Doyle a more welcoming and dynamic place during her years here as the graduate assistant and then as assistant director. She had a real knack for hiring remarkable students, for welcoming graduate and undergraduate student parents into the center, for being an open and caring presence, and for working so extraordinarily well with faculty and staff throughout the university. We wish her the best of luck in her new position. And we are grateful to Maura Pavalow who has stepped in as our assistant director in the interim.

Artist Talk:

SDWC Lounge

Gallery Opening:
Monday, Nov. 9, 6-8 PM
SDWC Gallery

Artist's Statement:
I am a visual storyteller creating narrative imagery imbued with elastic meaning. My visual mythology explores the process of mankind corrupting the natural world in pursuit of progress. My mixed media paintings, tapestries, and sculptures are a meditation on current events presented as a psychological landscape that build upon established story lines in pursuit of ordering madness in dense and complicated times.

My artwork reflects on the past, while it probes the future. The blueprint of how I create work can be broken down like this: I isolate a contemporary phenomenon, find a myth or story with relevance, and illustrate their intersection, using an arsenal of imagery and echniques assembled through research and intuition.

Exhalation of deep breath and feeling vibrations created by voice can be relaxing and meditative. Everyone is welcome and no previous singing or music training required. Led by Akiko Hatakeyama (akiko_hatakeyama@brown.edu).
