IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships

The IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships are coming to Portland. The IAAF will host a Fan Fest and Live Site activation at the Square March 17-20. This festival is inspired by the IAAF mission of uniting audiences and athletes through the shared experience of sport. Families will enjoy engaging youth activities centered around track & field. Attendees will also be able to watch a live feed of the IAAF World Indoor Championships in the Square, experiencing the thrill of the championships from the heart of the city.

At night, live music and performance acts will keep fans entertained with a beer garden providing food and beverage. For the first time ever, the athletes will come to receive their medals at the medaling ceremonies on the podium at the Square.

The activities in the Square will be free and open to the public.

Poopmaster 6000

Portland Mall Management, Inc. recently invested in the Poopmaster 6000, a unique street cleaning machine that will help keep the transit mall blocks downtown and around the Square clean of bird droppings. During the fall and winter months the crows flock together to roost at night in downtown Portland. The crows arrive at dusk and leave at dawn with quite a mess under the areas they’ve roosted. The typical cleaning process that is in place cannot keep up with the demand.

PMMI is sponsoring a pilot program for 6 months with a new sidewalk scrubber affectionately known as the Poopmaster 6000. The machine is a self-contained, ride-on, integrated scrubber/sweeper with a system that electronically converts water into an innovative cleaning solution that has no environmental impact. The machine provides a clean pathway along the pedestrian throughway. Look for it in action each morning Mon-Fri on SW 5th and SW 6th avenues along Portland's Transit Mall.

Did You Know?
The Weather Machine

Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this Groundhog Day, which means Spring is on its way! In Portland that means the weather can change from sun, to rain, and back in the course of a day.

If you do not want to guess at what kind of weather the day will hold, stop by the Square and check out the Weather Machine! The Weather Machine gives a forecast every day at noon. There is a two minute arrangement of trumpet fanfare and mist, culminating in the reveal of a symbol for the expected weather of the day.

HELIA: A stylized sun, for clear sunny days.
BLUE HERON: For the days of drizzle, mist and transitional weather.
DRAGON: Stormy days of heavy rain and wind.

This unique art installation has been at the Square since 1988. Be sure to stop by and see it for yourself!
