PHE’s new year quitting campaign highlights the debilitating nature of serious lung diseases for which smoking is the biggest preventable risk factor. The latest results reveal that the number of people diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) across the NW reached over 175,700 in 2014-15. Furthermore over 12,200 deaths across the North West between 2012-14 were attributable to COPD.
TFF amplified the campaign across parts of the North West, putting together an infographic for local areas to promote services and coordinated PR, working with partners to gain media coverage. Our Chief Executive, Andrea Crossfield, appeared on BBC Breakfast, BBC Radio Merseyside, BBC Radio Manchester and a team member was interviewed on D106.3 and Silk FM to motivate people to quit smoking this new year.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has awarded a licence to British American Tobacco for its e-Voke device that will allow it to be marketed as a smoking cessation aid. This is the first time e-cigarettes have been granted a licence. Recent media coverage has focused on new research from the University of California who published a study which concluded vaping is no safer than smoking. Professor Linda Bauld unpicks the recent study in an article
and finds little support for the claim that they’re as harmful as smoking.

Editor's note
Hi , welcome to your January eNews. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
2016 is set to be another successful year in tackling tobacco, with smokefree summer taking place again in areas across the north west, Smoke & Mirrors events and the introduction of the European Tobacco Products Directive bringing a raft of new measures, including new and larger graphic health warnings. We'll also see the move towards standardised tobacco packaging on May 20.
To start 2016, PHE's new year health harms campaign launched on December 29 and we hope to see North West smokers making a change this New Year for a healthier and wealthier future. I hope after seeing the campaign video smokers will realise the true effects of smoking and quit for good.
The TFF team are looking forward to working with you again throughout the year to take us another step towards our goal of making smoking history for children, as well as looking at how we address wider public health issues to improve the health of our communities.
Ian White, Project Manager: Communications and Marketing
