THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON
The amazing Emma Thompson has a habit of stealing movies, even when in a relatively minor role. When small town barber Barney Thomson (Robert Carlyle) accidentally commits a murder he turns to his mother Cemolina for help. That’s Emma Thompson, who shows her versatility in this movie with a totally against-type performance as a grotesque, raucously broad-accented, ex-prostitute, chain-smoking, bingo-loving schemer resplendent in moth-eaten fake furs. Ray Winstone, as the hapless copper investigating the murder, takes turns stealing scenes but it’s very much Emma Thomson’s movie. Not to be missed.
“Thompson elevates and enervates every scene she’s in.”
Variety
“A brilliant comic performance from Emma Thompson- she steals the movie”

45 YEARS
Charlotte Rampling delivers perhaps her finest performance as the genteel Kate Mercer, who is cheerfully preparing to celebrate 45 years with husband Geoff (Tom Courtenay) when he receives a letter telling him that the body of his previous girlfriend has been found, perfectly preserved in the ice of the Alps where she fell 50 years ago. This news gets a chilly reception from Kate, who is alarmed by the frozen spectre of a former love. With their equilibrium disturbed, the movie builds towards the climactic anniversary party with all the suspense of a psychological thriller.
“Charlotte Rampling delivers a masterclass in understatement”
Daily Mail
“Rampling has never been better than she is here, in the role of a placid, dog-walking, tea-drinking middle-class Brit, who finds the floor abruptly falling out beneath her.”

MELODY
Since starring in Lantana in 2001, Australian actor Rachael Blake has carved out a successful career in the USA and Europe. Well known in Australia for her TV work – you may remember her in Wildside or as Hazel Hawke in Hawke – she now has a strong international reputation. In Melody she plays a high powered British businesswoman who engages a young, homeless French hairdresser (Lucie Debay) to be a surrogate mother, moving her in to her big house on the English coast. After a turbulent beginning, the pair begin to develop a bond around convoluted questions of motherhood. A powerhouse performance from an Australian actress making her mark in world cinema.
Rachael Blake and Lucie Debay shared the actress award at Montreal Film Festival.

BREEDING IN CAPTIVITY- INVITATION TO A SPECIAL PRODUCERS’ SCREENING-
FREE SESSION
With the aim of gaining audience feedback prior to heading into the final edit, the producers, Larelle Bossi and Lucien Simon, with the support of BOFA are inviting you to the private screening of Breeding in Captivity.
Breeding In Captivity is a love story in the most unlikely place - a marriage. In the wake of a neighbourhood tragedy Owen and Alice Hargreaves are catapulted out of each other’s orbit and into a Lynch-ian nightmare of hedonism and depravity. Each is forced to confront the other and face the realisation that outside the cage, what seemed like freedom, may be their demise.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE – PRIVATE SCREENING AND DISCUSSION- FREE SESSION
At a time when Tasmania is taking a lead in combating domestic violence, BOFA is honoured to host a private screening of a major new film on this subject, BUT with a different perspective: that of the perpetrators and their journey of change. The film is a story about men who have perpetrated, or are struggling to maintain intimate relationships without resorting to abuse, physical or otherwise. We follow these men over several months, as they come together to talk, share information, challenge and support each other to be better men, partners and fathers to their wives and children. This screening is in the form of an Action Session. After viewing the film, an expert panel including the film makers, will discuss it in the context of Tasmania. The audience will be given the chance to make comment and suggestions.
