The death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a car crash 20 years ago today sparked an outpouring of grief across Britain. Tony Walter, who studied the “Diana Week” moment, says the public mourning did not happen in isolation. Rather, it revealed a wider change in the way Britons dealt with trauma and loss. And, as Ruth Penfold-Mounce writes, it created a template for media coverage of celebrity deaths.

The white hood of the Ku Klux Klan is among the most potent symbols of racism. But, as Kristofer Allerfeldt writes, while there are many groups out there still calling themselves the “Klan”, the KKK itself is very much a thing of the past – in part because of a massive tax bill from the 1940s it could never have hoped to repay.
