A pie and mash shop in Deptford, London, recently closed down – because of vegans, according to much of the media. Whether this was actually the reason or not, gentrification and the associated relationship between food tastes and personal identity seems to be one of growing importance, particularly in the context of Brexit. Ronald Ranta mulls this all over.

Laura Coffey-Glover investigated the much-loved brand’s Create the World collectible cards and found they appear to reinforce outdated male and female gender roles. It’s time those who make products for children think more carefully about the messages they send, she says.

Unlike conventional geopolitical maps showing cities and borders, it produces an alternative image of Europe as a space that has been shaped by the presence of migrants – the border violence, their confinement and their struggle to advance.
