Parks Replacement Bond Construction
Over the past three decades, tens of millions of people have walked, sat and danced upon the beloved bricks of Pioneer Courthouse Square. While the bricks have held up remarkably well over the years, many are now slated to be replaced in part with the Parks Replacement Bond. The majority of bricks will remain in place, but bricks located on the upper tier need to be removed so that a waterproof membrane can be installed to protect the businesses below in the
Visitor Information Center. All bricks affected by construction will be replaced with new ones bearing the same inscribed name and placed in a similar location. Maps showing each brick location will be updated upon completion of construction. These new bricks will provide the foundation for thousands of community events in coming years.
Two Oregon businesses, PAS Construction and woman-owned Staton Demolition are currently doing the heavy lifting, carefully demolishing and removing the old bricks. Portland Parks & Recreation aims to minimize waste from the project, so the project contractor, Howard S. Wright, has arranged for the bricks to be crushed for recycling. In the coming weeks, masons from Schonert and Associates
will install over 172 tons of new bricks. The new bricks were specifically developed for Portland’s wet weather by the brick manufacturer, Pacific Clay. The ‘Portland Paver’ is a brick burned at a much higher temperature – about 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit. The result is an incredibly strong brick that’s almost glass-like in its resistance to absorption.

Original Design Competition
In 1979, 162 designs were submitted to an open competition for plans to develop what is known today as Pioneer Courthouse Square. In March of 1980, the top five designs were selected and the finalists were given $10,000 and three months to finalize their designs. Portland team Will Martin, Doug Macy, Lee Kelly, Terence O'Donnell, Spencer Gill, and Robert Reynolds were declared the winners in July 1980.
