Christchurch-born Jeffrey Grice has, since the mid 1970's established a highly successful performance career in France. In 1999 he was made an Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government for services in the field of music.

At lunchtime TODAY, if you are near the National Library you can catch NZSM Master's student Melissa Cross discussing how the lives of contemporaries historian James Cowan and composer Alfred Hill intersected on the theme of Māori music.

The Composer Workshop this week is a masterclass from the staff of the Composition Programme ...

... and this week's Music Forum will be presented by Dr Nancy November from the University of Auckland. The topic is 'From Private to Public to Private?  On the Aesthetics and Reception of Beethoven’s String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95'

Dr Erin Helyard, NZSM's Lecturer in Historical Performance Practice, has just returned from a highly successful Hobart Baroque Festival – you can read more about that on our News pages. Jack Body is a true musical icon having influenced countless musicians, been a staunch and successful advocate for New Zealand music internationally, forged strong musical links between Asia and New Zealand, and been instigator of myriad significant and innovative projects over decades.

NZSM is hosting a concert in honour of Jack's 70th year based around  works for string quartet that represent a cross-section of his work. The New Zealand String Quartet, quartet in residence at NZSM, will perform three of his works: Saetas, A House in Bali, and three shorter works gathered together under the title Yunan Sketches. In addition, Richard Greager and Margaret Medlyn will present several song arrangements that are among Jack's favourites.

The concert will be followed by a reception  – the concert is free, but for catering purposes we ask those intending to come to the reception to RSVP to composition@nzsm.ac.nz by Friday 11 April.

Both of our Corado's (from the 2013 NZSM production of Verdi's Il corsaro) have been doing outstandingly since then. Tenors Thomas Atkins and Oliver Sewell were both chosen to be Freemasons Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists with New Zealand Opera.
Thomas has been studying at the Guildhall in London on a scholarship won as part of his prizes from the finals of the IFAC Australian Singing Competition in 2012. In fact you can hear how things are going with him – Thomas is on a return visit home at the moment and gives a fund-raising recital this Sunday at St Andrew's On The Terrace.
Thomas Atkins and friends – 6:00pm Sunday 13 April

Oliver Sewell is working with NZ Opera projects at the moment but we have just heard that he has been offered a place at the Manhattan School of Music with an annual scholarship of US $37, 250.

Other recent news stories featuring our staff, alumni and students include:
   – international publications in Voices Music Therapy forum (Dr Daphne Rickson and Patrice Dennis),
   – a first-equal in the National Concerto Competition (Arna Morton),
   – new roles with national organisations and other awards for Music Studies students (including Carina Esguerra and Keriata Royal)
   – and reviews of Erin Helyard's contributions to Hobart Baroque.

We also announce that David Long will be the next Jack C Richards / Creative New Zealand Composer in Residence at NZSM.

Read about all these and more in our News pages.

HELP US EDUCATE OUR YOUNG MUSICIANS
