SurPASS Tip of the Month Check out how you can use Matchmaker, from NIH reporter, to find similar funded projects, as well as identify institutes and study sections that fund your area of research!
Clinical Research Tips of the Month MCW has a license for the electronic data capture (EDC) system Qualtrics. It can be found on the InfoScope homepage and is free to MCW researchers. It is a great alternative to REDCap for new investigators just starting out who don’t yet have funding. REDCap, while a great EDC program, does cost at least $300 to open a new project plus an hourly rate for Mark Oium from CTSI to set forms and variables for the study.
ASCRS Career Development Award
$75,000/year for two years
Proposal due in eBridge: March 8, 2021The goal of the CDA is to provide young surgeons with the support necessary for the initiation and development of an academic career in colorectal surgery. As opposed to the LPG awards, the CDA focuses on career development and mentorship of the individual rather than solely on the research proposal. The award is intended for the academic investigator demonstrating significant creativity in research relevant to the pathophysiology or management of diseases of the colon, rectum, anus or small bowel.
The Office of Research is pleased to announce an opportunity to provide full-time or full professional effort faculty within the School of Medicine funds to allow faculty members with grant proposals that are scored but not funded to obtain critical preliminary data to support successful resubmission. We will provide funding for research projects specifically designed to strengthen the federal grant applications that have received excellent priority scores but are outside the funding window. NIH R01, VA Merit award, NSF and DOD grants are examples of the types of applications that are eligible for this funding mechanism.
Researchers with relevant research from all areas of science are invited to apply to this RFA. Priority will be given to collaborations between basic or translational science, and population science or epidemiologic researchers who propose to study topics related to understanding or addressing cancer disparities. Inclusion of correlative studies that utilize MCW CC Shared Resources, especially those provided by the GSPMC (NGS such as genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic sequencing and bioinformatic analysis), are encouraged.
MCW Cancer Center NGS-Based Pilot Projects-Sequencing, Bioinformatics, and Analysis Award
Sequencing through Bioinformatics projects will receive up to $15,000 for GSPMC services
Bioinformatics-only projects will receive up to $5,000 for GSPMC services
Application Due: March 31, 2021To advance precision oncology and the molecular understanding of cancer, the MCW Cancer Center (CC), in partnership with the Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center (GSPMC), is inviting proposals for small-scale research projects that utilize any combination of the genomic, transcriptomic or epigenomic technologies and bioinformatics platforms available in the GSPMC. Responsive proposals will describe projects that either improve our understanding of cancer initiation, progression or therapeutic resistance or show promise to improve cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis or treatment.
The Office of Research is pleased to announce an opportunity to provide full-time or full professional effort faculty within the School of Medicine with pilot funding for projects in which multiple laboratories work collaboratively to solve complex biomedical problems. The goal of the funding mechanism is that the research team is positioned to submit a competitive application for a program project or equivalent grant to NIH within 3 years of initiation of this award. Applications will be required to include at least 3 faculty members all collaborating to one overall project goal that will be funded and may also include funding for the development of cores that will be essential for the NIH submission. The application will require that the team describe the proposed structure of the NIH
submission and how each of the individual elements will synergize with each other to achieve the goals of the project. Factors that will be considered in the evaluation of these projects will include the human health significance and innovation of the project; expertise and research accomplishments of the researchers; the strength of the research premise; and the need for additional funding to achieve extramural support.
We Care Fund for Medical Innovation and Research 2021 Faculty Seed Grants
$50,000 Promising pilot grant, distributed over 1 year
$100,000 New collaboration grant, distributed over 2 years
Application Due: Friday, April 9, 2021The mission of the We Care Fund is to use contributions made available by the philanthropic community to support Department of Surgery faculty who are creating innovative therapies and clinical programs that benefit patients in Wisconsin and throughout the world. Proposals should demonstrate the importance of innovation and discovery to advance science and the clinical care of patients. Any level of science is eligible for funding; preference will be given to those proposals that effectively articulate a translational theme even if the bedside application may be in the future. Proposals may include innovative basic science or clinical research projects. Potential for extramural funding will be a consideration for these applications as the goal of We Care is to stimulate preliminary data for a
larger NIH (or equivalent) proposal.
Abstracts or videos may be submitted for the following Clinical Congress programs: Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum
The Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum offers researchers the opportunity to present the results of their original, basic science, clinical, education, health sciences, and translational research. Video-Based Education Sessions
The Video-Based Education Sessions aims to educate surgeons and members of surgical teams in order to improve the care of the surgical patient, as well as safeguard the standards of care in an optimal practice environment. History of Surgery Poster Session
The History of Surgery Poster Session offers surgical history enthusiasts the opportunity to present on subjects of interest related to the history of the field of surgery and its subspecialties.
