Bikers unite against Teen SuicideRiders Against Teens Suicide - Tribal Nations Motorcycle Community collaborated with Cross Over Trust, Spreydon Youth Community Trust, Suburbs Rugby Football Club, and the Rowley Resource Centre to host the Riders Against Teen Suicide (RATS) festival on Hoon Hay Park on 27 February 2021. The motorcyclists enjoyed a morning of biking before arriving at the park around 1pm. The young people had been eagerly awaiting their arrival with the noise of the motorbikes being heard before 150 motorbikes appeared riding down Mathers Road. Once parked up, the bikers joined in with a 3v3 basketball competition against young people and the Canterbury RAMs, played on the mechanical bull, rode adapted bicycles from LJ & Friends, and joined in with the colour countdown where everybody had fun throwing paint over each
other. The Club organised great spot prizes for cake eating competitions and a questionnaire where those taking part had to find out interesting facts about the bikers. The event finished up with some words of wisdom and music from a local artist. Our board members Karolin Potter (pictured above) and Melanie Coker attended this event. Pioneer pool upgrade going swimminglyThe upgrade at the popular Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre is going well, with works currently on track to be finished at the end of May 2021. The pool area closed in November 2020 and our contractors have been busy removing the roof to replace the pool’s filtration system, install new mechanical plant and strengthening the building. Our team has now removed all of the old mechanical and pool filtration equipment and over the following weeks, we’ll test the new equipment to make sure it’s working and install the new roof over the pool area. Update on Dyers Pass RoadWork is progressing well on our Dyers Pass Road work sites. We have been focused on a drainage channel and sealing the widened shoulder on the hill side of the road but we expect to start working on the outside of the road where the guardrails will be positioned in the next few weeks. Travel time between The Sign of The Takahe and Governors Bay will remain around 30 minutes. We have found that in general it is similar or quicker to travel through the Lyttelton Tunnel. The overnight closures (from 7pm until 6am) will continue each week from Sunday night to Friday morning through into June 2021. Barrington Mall upgradeWe're making safety improvements to Barrington Street to make it safer for people accessing Barrington Mall. From Sunday 21 February 2021 for approximately three weeks, we will be working at nights (7pm - 7am) to remove the right turn out from the mall entrance, construct new kerb Doors open at St Martins MenzshedThe St Martins Menzshed officially opened on Saturday, 20 February. Chairman Brian Davies says the group decided to set up a Menzshed after researching community needs. “We wanted to explore a community project focused on blokes - particularly those over 60,” he says. Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board Deputy Chair Lee Sampson was there to help celebrate. Garden Awards for green thumbsThe Community Board received a record number of 54 entries for the 2021 Spreydon-Cashmere Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards. Garden assessments were carried out by Canterbury Horticultural Society members between 22 and 27 February. An awards ceremony will be jointly hosted by the Horticultural Society and the Community Board in late March, and all entrants will receive a participation certificate plus there will be special awards for: Beginner edible gardener, Tomatoes, Fruit and berries, Organic garden, Sustainability features, and Yield. Full bloom for Spreydon Sunflower CompetitionCongratulations to all our sunflower-growers! A prize giving and community picnic to finish the competition was held on Saturday, 13 February at Spreydon Domain. This event was organised by Ruth Vercoe, member of Spreydon Neighbourhood Association. Summer with your NeighboursThe Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board has granted small subsidies for 43 neighbourhood gatherings being held in its Board area over the summer (between 23 October 2020 and 31 March 2021), and a total of more than 2,300 people are expected to attend. Formerly known as Neighbourhood Week, these gatherings have been held annually for over 20 years, with funding applications open in August each year. Three years ago, community boards from across the city, decided to extend this popular event for the whole summer after feedback from applicants, and it is now known as Summer with your neighbours. Lalaga Night MarketSAVE THE DATE! Your favourite Night Market is back on Friday 12 March from 4pm - 7pm at Te Komanawa Rowley School. Board funds young dreamsThe Board granted local youth Ngaire Ferris and Sophie Hartshaw funding towards the costs of taking part in Tongariro National Park – the Macpac Hillary Challenge National Final. They were both members of the Cashmere team that received a 5th ranking in a field of 12 teams. The event involves a 5-day series of outdoor adventure challenges including wilderness experience, problem solving, and a multi-sport race on the final day. Innovating Streets for People FundTwo of the successful Innovating Streets for People projects that received funding from Waka Kotahi are Better Beckenham and Selwyn Streets. These are being co-designed and co-delivered by community and Council. Staff continue to work with Student Design Consultants to develop plans for the Selwyn Street project. Next students will tell staff which of the draft plans are the most important for them to get to school safely, as there is not budget to implement all the proposals. This approach is a first for New Zealand. It showcases the innovative and creative ways of working with communities on the Innovating Streets projects. The Board will consider a report on this project in March. Keen to help native plants survive?Come and be part of our Port Hills Reserves volunteer days and help native plants thrive. Regular maintenance around the young plantings is essential for their survival. Without being cleared, the plants cannot compete with the surrounding grass and they will eventually die from the lack of light. Christchurch stands to benefit from climate actionA collective commitment to urgent climate action will deliver many benefits for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, says Councillor Sara Templeton, chair of Christchurch City Council’s Sustainability and Community Resilience Committee.
