The Take The Time campaign is about all of us having the time to engage with our familes and friends on significant days. It's about common time off as a community. Where people are asked, or required, to work on days when the majority of the community are off, they need to be properly compensated. These workers are taking time away from their social, community or family activities to allow other Australians to participate in leisure activities. It is fair and appropriate that penalty rates are paid on these days to compensate those who serve others.
The independant Senator Nick Xenophon has now asked the Australian Parliament to remove penalty rates for some retail and hospitality workers. This is an attack on all those asked to work on weekends and public holidays.
The ACTU has set up a Save Our Weekend website to collect submissions to the Senate Comittee which is reviewing Senator Xenophons proposal. Everyone interested in protecting weekend and public holiday entitlements should visit this site and have your say.
