Barnard College Construction Update - Feb. 25, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

This week finds us in the final stages of clearing/cleaning out Lehman Hall in preparation for the demolition. We also are close to finishing the scaffolding on the south side of the site between Lehman and the Barnard Hall Annex, and you should start seeing workers building a hard cover over the air-handling unit on the roof of the Annex to keep it safe during construction.

Next week, we expect to be working on closing off the Claremont-side sewer connection that runs into Lehman.  The work should last about a day, but shouldn’t impact traffic along Claremont. It will be a bit noisy, but most of the work will be done inside the construction fence, which should help lessen the impact. We're not certain yet which day we'll be doing that work.

Here's what to expect over the next two weeks:

Two Week Look-Ahead -  Feb. 25 - March 10

Look for the demolition – or as our construction team calls it deconstruction – of Lehman Hall to begin around the second week of March.  The demolition phase will be noisy, with the contractor bringing in machines to help pull down the walls, pillars, and other parts of the building.  We expect demolition to be completed sometime in mid-to-late May.

We are taking every practical measure to mitigate the impacts, and in many cases – especially concerning noise and dust – we are exceeding the regulations. Fortunately, the construction industry has implemented new techniques and adopted best practices in recent years, greatly reducing the noise and dust impacts these projects have on adjacent neighborhoods.
