What is it about masculinity and power that can turn so toxic? For millennia, masculinity has been associated with the phallus: strong, unyielding, dominant. But there are other, perhaps more valuable attributes associated with male genitalia, such as the testes – which contain the seeds for new life and, perhaps, new ideas about what it means to be a man.

The launch of a Apple product has become something of a ritual and there have been predictable tales of devotees queuing for the iPhone X. The narrative tends to poke fun at these “cultish” people who have nothing better to do than waste hours or days standing in line. But take a closer look and many people standing outside their Apple shop have different and lucrative reasons for being there.

Chinatowns are a familiar feature of big cities the world over. But have you ever stopped to wonder why they look so similar? It’s no coincidence. Since the first Chinatown was built in San Francisco after the earthquake there in 1906, all other Chinatowns have been developed using the same template.
