Student Volunteering Round Table - Collaboration and Capacity Building

How do the different stakeholders come together to make student volunteer engagement work from their different perspectives?

As part of National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) celebrations, The Centre for Volunteering invites you to participate in a round-table discussion about student volunteer engagement, followed by networking and well-deserved drinks and afternoon tea.

Whether you are from the not-for-profit, educational, government or corporate sector, this is an opportunity for you to come discuss and learn more about the issues and opportunities, to share perspectives, and to contribute to the collaborative effort in support of student volunteer engagement.

It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the week that was, to strategise on future directions and initiatives, and very importantly to unwind after a busy week of events.

Our guest speaker on the day will be Dr. Valentine Mukuria, Curriculum Advisor at UWS who will kick things off by leading a discussion about capacity building and assessment of impact of community-university initiatives.

Please join us for this important, topical and exciting discussion

When: Friday 8 August, 2pm - 4pm

Where: The Centre for Volunteering, Level 3, 40 Gloucester St, The Rocks

Commonwealth Bank improving the facilities of our Members

Two of our Member organisations have been assisted with makeovers recently by the Commonwealth Bank. These events were held at a nursing home and a childcare facility.  Both sites were in need of gardening assistance and the office of the nursing home required painting.

The Commonwealth Bank team came to their assistance with donated materials and paint. The office of the nursing home now looks much more professional, neat and tidy with a wonderful splash of colour.  The team also completely overhauled the yards of the childcare facility and nursing home: cleaning, weeding, pruning and planting.

Both Members were thrilled with the teams efforts.  One of our Members commented : "I must admit I was not sure how we would go at the start of the day with so many people and a very long “to do” list. However, thanks to the professionalism and hard work of your team the outcome was simply amazing. Our management, staff, children and parents are thrilled with the result.”

A huge thank you for both teams support and enthusiasm. For more information on our Corporate Volunteering program, please email corporate@volunteering.com.au or check the website

Advertise your volunteer position on Social Justice Opportunities

SJOpps is a guide for law students and new lawyers about opportunities to become involved in the work of organisations with a focus on social justice.

In addition to legal skills, studying law develops other useful skills such as analysis, verbal and written communication and attention to detail. If you have a volunteer position that could use the skills of a law student or new lawyer, SJOpps is a free and easy way to reach motivated young law students and legal professionals who are already looking for opportunities to volunteer or work in the social justice sector on a regular basis.

Email us on sjopps@nationalprobono.org.au with the ad or the details and we’ll place a job on the SJOpps board and advertise it through social media.

If you already have an online ad for the position, simply email the link to us.

If you don’t already have an ad, email the following information:
• Name of the organisation
• Name of the position
• Commitment required (e.g. full time, part time and number of hours per week)
• Closing date for applications

Finding legal information for your community group will now be easier than ever before with the launch of the Not-for-profit Law Information Hub.

The Information Hub is a new home for Not-for-profit Law's resources, with a new layout, better searching and added resources on a range of current legal issues including the:

• Charity record-keeping fact sheet, and
• Deductible Gift Recipient Guide.
Most significantly, the Hub now extends to cover Victorian, NSW and Commonwealth laws.

The Hub features over 100 plain English, comprehensive legal fact sheets and guides to help charities and not-for-profits from the establishment phase, through running an organisation, to changing or ending an organisation.

Options Paper – Australia’s Charities and Not-for-profits Consultation

The federal government’s Department of Social Services have released their new Options Paper – Australia’s Charities and Not-for-profits outlining the proposed replacement arrangements to follow the abolition of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

Repeal of the ACNC follows the government’s election commitment to deregulate the community sector, streamline processes and reduce red tape.
The new Options Paper follows the recent call for stakeholder input by the Centre for Social Impact on shaping the model of the new independent body representing not-for-profits, the Civil Society National Centre for Excellence (NCE).

Submissions in response to the Options Paper close on 20 August. A submission template is available to download here.
