Standardised tobacco packaging is in touching distance after MPs voted in support of legislation, with 367 voting for and just 113 against. This is a huge achievement for public health and following a vote in the House of Lords expected next week, we could see them introduced from May 20th 2016. You can read more on the vote here and see how your local MP voted here. We know that one in four
MPs who voted against the measure have links to the tobacco industry.
Australia implemented standard packs in December 2012 and have seen a 12.8% decrease in consumption. This decrease is also down to the broader comprehensive tobacco control strategy that Australia has in place but the evidence is clear that standard packs will make a difference here in England.
To highlight the difference that legislation will make, especially in preventing children from starting, TFF arranged and attended a discussion with Salford young people to get their thoughts on standard packs. This appeared on BBC National news throughout the day of the announcement which you can view here.
As part of our ongoing NW standardised packs campaign, we recently held an event for 25 teenagers from across the region to help them understand how advertising through packaging can influence decisions. Young people produced a series of mini videos and sent them to their MPs to ask them to support standardised packaging which you can view here. We also wrote to and tweeted all NW MPs in the run up to the vote to ask them to support standard packs, with a link to the videos and photos of young people from their locality.

Last month we brought together over 60 health professionals from NW councils and local NHS organisations to discuss how to achieve our shared ambition of a tobacco free future. The day was a step forward in making plans to tackle tobacco across our region by sharing knowledge, best practice and allowing young people to tell professionals why standard packs would make a difference.
Read more about the day here. It was also an important opportunity to hear more detail about the recommendations in the ASH 'Smoking Still Kills Report' due to be published in June. It's not to late to sign up, please email admin@smokefreeaction.org.uk by March 27.

Hi , welcome to your March eNews.
This year is already proving to be historic in the fight against tobacco. Success with future smokefree cars and standardised packs legislation combined with the upcoming display ban which will be in place in all shops from April means more and more children will be protected from tobacco.
These are huge achievements. Thank you for your continued support and hard work, this is a great example of what we can achieve working collaboratively to create big changes for children and our local communities.
We need to now keep this momentum going, fight the challenges from the tobacco industry that will no doubt follow and all work together towards our goal of making smoking history for children.
