From the Director's Chair

We can’t escape it - as Geoffrey Chaucer wrote in the 1300s, “Time & tide waits for no man” (or woman) and “no one is so powerful that they can stop the march of time.”  Pretty uplifting if you are 15 years old and can’t wait to get your driver’s license; but a bit of a reality check as our youth begins to waver and the onset of bad knees, sore shoulders & aching backs invade our bodies.

Lately, it seems there is a plethora of research regarding longevity and quality of life based on simple formulas & data.  Many of you have heard or taken the “Vitality Compass” which according to your current lifestyle, gives you your life expectancy & your healthy life span.  It identifies areas of strengths & weaknesses and will give you prompts to add days to your life by following some basic wellness suggestions. (According to the calculations, I need to drink more wine, which I can work on.)  One major component of living a healthy & balanced life besides the obvious, exercise & good nutrition, is having a very connected social network.

Volunteering, exercising with friends, frequently socializing with friends, attending faith-based events and so on.  A study published by AFAA (American Fitness & Aerobic Association) found that 72% of people stuck with exercise programs when working out with a friend.  So for the month of March we are asking you to bring a friend to the club & take our March Madness Fitness Challenge (see details below.)  Normally you have to be a member to participate in our fitness promotions, but because you get a great t-shirt after completing the challenge we want to share your fashion statement with a friend-and maybe get them to be a constant work-out buddy.  Since we can’t stop the march of time, let’s enjoy it & maybe bring a friend along the way.  Oh, and by the way, if you have taken the “sit down & get up” test for longevity, let me know how you did-or give me a hand up off the floor!

Yours in Health and Fitness,
Laurel

Member Spotlight - Ross Lewis

This month’s member spotlight, Ross Lewis, grew up at the club coming up with his grandpa, David Oltman, & taking children’s tennis lessons from Tracy.  Fast forward 20 years, you’ll see Ross now on the fitness side of the club, exercising more than ever.  While staying active was always important to Ross, it wasn’t until August of 2014 that he took his health & wellness more seriously.  His energy levels had dropped, he wasn’t feeling well & his clothes no longer fit.  He decided it was time to make a change, so he started personal training with CAC trainer, Kristina.  And he kept at it – he stayed the course – working out daily with cardio in the morning & weights in the evening while also modifying his diet.   As a result of the motivation, accountability & support he received from training with Kristina, he has now lost over 60 pounds!  He also attributed the healthy, delicious meals provided by Fit Flavors which made it easy for him to maintain portion control & make healthy choices.  Now Ross says that he feels better, has more energy and looks better than ever.  His words of advice, “Stick with it because results take time - but it is so worth it in the end.”  What Ross said he loves most about the Club is the comfortable environment & welcoming, non-intimidating atmosphere.  When he isn’t working out at the Club, Ross loves traveling and real estate where he is a realtor for Coldwell Banker.

Business Spotlight - The Cow Program

Hope through The Cow Project
Member, Sandy Carter, aspires to make a difference through the Cow Project.  The vision is eradicating extreme poverty in African communities through micro-financing. Through a comprehensive training program, impoverished families transform their farms to enable caring for a cow.  The project requires that the families invest in their farms by building a zero-grazing shed for the cow, planting sufficient grass to feed a cow, & implementing sanitation requirements for the family & the cow, to keep the cow in top health.  Once all eligibility requirements are met, the family is granted a living loan of a pregnant cow, valued at $800.  Once the calf is born, a cow gives around 20 liters of milk a day.  The family uses about two liters for their own nutritional needs & sells the remainder which provides the family a small but steady income. The loan is paid back by raising the calf for 9 to 12 months, & then passing along that calf to another family that is trained & ready. Although the Cow Project is self-sustaining, there are still 2,000 families trained & waiting for a cow to begin their journey out of poverty!  Interested in being an integral part of this transformative process?  Visit their website at:  uganda-cow-project.
