Exeter to train more of Tomorrow's doctors

The government has granted permission for the University of Exeter Medical School to train an additional 88 Medicine students each year, in a major boost to the South West.

The additional numbers will mean more trainee doctors working in the region and will bolster opportunities for Westcountry students to train in Medicine close to home. It will also mean an economic boost for Exeter and Truro, where the Medical School has campuses. We are now consulting staff on staff and resource needed for the expansion. Read more here.

Academy of Nursing Launch

We are pleased to announce that we will be launching the University of Exeter's new Academy of Nursing on Thursday 31 May at the Research Innovation Learning & Development Building at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

The Academy is a joint project between four NHS Trusts in Devon and the University of Exeter, and will be the first step in an ambitious plan to both educate more nurses in Devon and support existing nurses throughout the region. For more information and to book, click here. Follow the launch on Twitter using #ExeterNurse.

STAFF OPPORTUNITIES

Geneva/Exeter Collaborative Research Seed Grant

The Geneva/Exeter Collaborative Grants programme is designed to provide “seed-corn” support for interactions between researchers at both institutions to build the basis for new research and teaching initiatives and proposals for external funding (to help sustain and expand collaborative activity).

Up to £7,400 per project is available for collaboration in any discipline on a project of up to 12 months (from date of award), with total funding available of approx. £22,000 provided by match funding from the two institutions. Deadline for applications is Monday 14th May. More information is available here. If you have any questions please contact Rachel Jones, Global Partnerships Business Partner.

International collaborations

Mobility funding may be available for next year for a small number of institutions where there are a number of existing or target links either across the Medical School or the wider University. To be able to help identify which institutions these should be, it would be useful to know where either your existing collaborators are or if there are any institutions you would like to be working with in the future (research and/or education). We would particularly be interested to hear if you have existing links with the University of British Colombia (UBC) or if you might be looking to develop them.

Please let Rachel Jones, Global Partnerships Business Partner, know if there are any institutions you are interested in, or if you have any international partnerships questions.

UK-Gulf Institutional Links Grants

The UK-Gulf Institutional Links programme is part of the UK Government’s strategic commitment to strengthening partnerships with the Gulf countries in our interests and theirs to help tackle the challenges we share. It is designed to establish links beyond the level of the individual researcher and innovation practitioner, opening up opportunities for sustainable, solution-oriented collaborations between research groups.

Grants range from £50,000 to £125,000 for up to two years.

Applications can be submitted for collaborations between the UK and Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE. The deadline is Thursday 28th June. More information can be found here.

Reimagine Education Awards open

The international Reimagine Education Awards have now opened. These “Oscars” of Education are extremely prestigious and we have been lucky enough to be shortlisted for several awards in the last 2 years, and won an award for Green Consultants in 2017. We would encourage you to review the 17 award categories. You will have until Tuesday 31st July 2018 at 23:59 GMT to submit an application, and we would encourage everyone to discuss nominations with Professor Jean McEwan and we can consider our nominations at Education Executive in May ahead of the deadline.

Event toolkit

An Events Planning toolkit is available for all University of Exeter staff and students to use. It includes checklists, templates and other resources to help event organisers.

In addition, the Health and Safety Event Management Standard explains the actions that are required by any person defined as an organiser of events on University managed premises (including campus grounds).

Your data protection responsibilities

The law around how we use personal data is changing, and all colleagues need to know their responsibilities before the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on Friday 25th May. We can all be compliant by making simple changes, such as ensuring we lock our offices, and lock our desktop computers when we're away from our desks. The data you handle is also more secure when it's saved on the secure University drives (the N: or U: drive) and when we password protect key documents, when using shared spaces. Find out more here.

Risks of using external hard discs

USB attached external hard discs have a finite lifespan and if over 3-4 years old become prone to physical deterioration, which can lead to data loss. We recommend that you save data on the secure University drives, as above, but otherwise we suggest that you undertake the following preventions:

- Buy a second device to back up valuable data and store in a separate secure place, in good environmental conditions. Ensure that this secondary device is used regularly enough to prevent mechanical seizure and that the data is still accessible.

- Copy valuable data to the UEMS backup drive – this can be arranged by Desktop Support Team – so raise a SID request and Desktop Support Team will be in touch to discuss your needs.

- A project within Exeter IT has started that will lead to other options to store data. More details will follow when solutions become known.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Campus developments over the next decade

A new website dedicated to the Capital Strategy has been launched. It will detail key projects being progressed by the University, including the X-Keys refurbishment at St Luke's. The programme supports our strategic aim of being a global 100 research university.

As construction work begins on the major estate development projects, you can keep up to date with construction updates, temporary diversions and alternative routes via the website or by signing up to the weekly Campus works newsletter. Read about featured projects here.

Cross Keys redevelopment

Following Council approval, Cross Keys will be refurbished over the summer period. The £1.7 million project will include reconfiguring and upgrading the existing ground floor level, as well as creating a first-floor extension, increasing capacity from 150 to around 250. More information can be found on the Capital Strategy website.

Medical School infrastructure update

Following on from staff feedback, a set of hooks have been installed in the link area between Education and IBCS Offices in Medical School Building. These are to be used to hang wet weather clothes to assist with them drying out away from shared offices. Please feel free to use this as required.
