Vision to reality: Construction of the Health and Medical Research building was launched with planting of seedlings for an indigenous bush medicine garden, a cultural focal point of the final development. Read more Construction Update A Design and Construct contract was awarded to Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd in November 2021, with the commencement of construction on 2 December 2021. The construction team has relocated on-site services, installed construction huts and site fencing. Piling was completed ahead of schedule in February and the concrete slab is now being poured. Tower cranes have begun to arrive on site and an upgrade to the University Drive intersection has improved traffic flow past the site. As always, we ask pedestrians and drivers to heed safety and directional signage and be aware of changing conditions near the work zone. Discussions continue with various stakeholders regarding specialist equipment requirements, indigenous recognition and integrated artworks within the new facility. The project team thank all involved for their continued efforts throughout the ongoing consultations. In an exciting development, two HMRB prototype dry and wet PC2 laboratories will be created in Flinders Medical Centre. This will enable our researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the new operating environment in HMRB. These spaces are anticipated for delivery in 2023. Work Integrated Learning in Action Two Flinders University Civil Engineering undergraduates, along with others from UniSA, recently joined the site for industry placements with builders Hansen Yuncken, gaining valuable work experience to enhance their studies. Additional students will undertake placements on the HMRB construction site as the project progresses, in line with Flinders' focus on graduate employability and industry partnerships. Sustainable Outcomes Builders Hansen Yuncken have recently introduced a site specific waste management strategy on the HMRB project, improving recycling practices throughout the construction program. In consultation with SUEZ the site compound will have dedicated bins for organics, general waste, cardboard and refundable bottles and cans. A new benchmark for Hansen Yuncken sites, this initiative aligns strongly with Flinders University's vision for a more sustainable future, recovering the maximum possible utility and value from materials consumed on our campus. |
