RANKED CHOICE VOTING (RCV)

New York City is using Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in this year’s primary elections. RCV was introduced to New York City in our last municipal (local) election- learn more about what RCV is and how it works:

What is Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)?

  • A voting process used in local and special elections in which voters are able to rank up to five candidates for each office. This only applies to city offices (City Council, Comptroller, Mayor, etc). It does not apply to state or federal elections (Governor, State senator, House of Representatives).

When did NYC adopt this?

  • Adopted in 2019 in a ballot referendum, which won with over 73% of the votes.

What’s the benefit of RCV?

  • RCV ensures candidates with a majority support win elections! It also helps make your voice more powerful by considering your preferences and not just your top candidate.

How does RCV work?

  • You have one (1) vote, but with five (5) choices. Ranked Choice Voting comes in when your most preferred candidate is eliminated. For example, you want candidate A to win the election, but he did not receive enough votes. They will be eliminated, and your vote will be transferred to your second preferred candidate, candidate B. This process continues until one candidate receives over 50% of the votes.

How should I rank my candidates?

  • It's pretty simple! Rank your favorite candidate at the top and your less favorite candidates at the bottom! Suppose you want candidate A to win the election then just put candidate A as your first choice! But you should always rank as many candidates as possible in case your first few options do not pan out.

  • Do not rank the candidate you do not want to see in office. If there is a candidate you really do not like, do not rank that candidate. Conversely, if there is a candidate you feel is tolerable you should still rank them just in case your favorite candidates lose.

  • Do not rank your favorite candidate more than once! Because your vote is only counted once, ranking your favorite candidate more than once does not help your candidate and you lose your chance to rank other candidates!

  • While you do not need to rank up to five (5) candidates, it is always good to use up your choices. Because if you don’t rank them, someone else will! If there are not five candidates in a given race, you can just rank the ones you like.
